How to bet the 2022 Pegasus Stakes

June 16th, 2022

A total of nine three-year-olds will go postward in Saturday’s $150,000 Pegasus S. at Monmouth Park. The 1 1/16-mile dirt endeavor is a top-heavy contest with a trio of horses that appear to be a cut above their foes. But there is still value to be had in the race.

My wagers will center around the consistently good #1 Cyberviking (8-1) for conditioner Jorge Delgado. By The Big Beast, the bay colt has been first or second in eight of nine lifetime tries to date, and it was his latest effort at Gulfstream Park that might have impressed me most.

Cyberviking proved capable of handling a one-turn mile last time out when a smart allowance runner-up, and I have a lot of confidence he will endure the 1 1/16 miles while coming in fresh. He has the early foot to be in the hunt from the break and will be tough to keep out of the money with a ground-saving trip beneath Jose Batista.

#2 Home Brew (3-1) is the one to beat for trainer Brad Cox. The sophomore by Street Sense has been in the top-two in all but one career outing, led by a score in the Oaklawn S. in his most recent endeavor. Home Brew has posted six solid morning drills in advance of his Monmouth Park debut, and he will be especially difficult to keep out of the exacta with Florent Geroux taking the reins.

The other ‘logical’ contender in the cast is the Chad Brown-conditioned #4 Electability (9-5). A $300,000 yearling purchase, the Quality Road gelding had won two straight prior to finishing third in the Peter Pan S. (G3) at Belmont Park. The Klaravich color bearer shows a trio of morning moves on the surface in preparation of Saturday, and his early foot will have him in the mix from the word go. Manny Franco will be in the stirrups atop the win contender.
