How to bet the 2022 Sir Shackleton Stakes

April 1st, 2022

A well-matched field of nine will go postward in the $100,000 Sir Shackleton S. at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The seven-furlong tilt lacks a standout in what appears to be a good betting event.

The Saffie Joseph-trained #9 Collaborate (3-1) has been something of an all-or-nothing type since his unveiling last season, and I believe that we will witness the ‘good’ version of him in this endeavor en route to picking up his first stakes win. The bay son of Into Mischief has earned each of his trio of lifetime victories on the course, and while he is winless from four prior black-type tries, everything looks set to come together for him on Saturday.

Collaborate was a sharp allowance winner in his 2022 bow two back before failing to fire in the Gulfstream Park Mile (G2) most recently while facing some excellent foes. The four-year-old colt endured a less than desirable trip in that outing, and he should be more focused in this spot with the addition of blinkers. I expect the top pick to receive a fine voyage tracking the tempo from the opening bell beneath Junior Alvarado.

Joseph will also saddle #5 Girolamo’s Attack (8-1), who is an intriguing sleeper at a nice price. The four-time local winner has been in subpar form in his last pair of engagements, but the gelding has run some huge races on the surface, and the cut back to seven furlongs seems like a wise decision for the five-year-old. The top-three player will stalk early on beneath Edwin Gonzalez.

Bill Mott’s #1 Fortin Hill (5-2) rallied to be a smart runner-up in a local allowance tilt on the oval while making his first appearance in more than 18 months. The Mucho Macho Man six-year-old flashed considerable ability in 2020, and if he returns to something close to that in his second run off the long absence, then he rates as a win contender from the rail. Jose Ortiz will climb aboard the Indiana-bred.
