How to bet the 2023 Chillingworth Stakes

September 28th, 2023

An excellent field of seven fillies and mares will run 6 1/2 furlongs on the Santa Anita dirt in the $100,000 Chillingworth S. (G3) on Friday. The opening-day feature is led by Bob Baffert’s #5 Eda (4-5), who has amassed seven wins in succession dating back to 2021. Purchased for $550,000 as a two-year-old, the filly is not especially flashy but always gets the job done as of late, and it’s too tough to go against after I have underestimated her on numerous occasions in the past.

Chillingworth Wagers

Eda is unblemished from four races at The Great Race Place and is also 4-for-4 at this distance, for an outfit that has kept her in top form since her unveiling. The Kentucky-bred bay has very good early foot and will be forcing the tempo from the start under the guidance of local go-to pilot Juan Hernandez

I am expecting a big run from the John Shirreffs-trained #7 Lady T (12-1) at a good price in the dash. The bay Into Mischief four-year-old was wide throughout when fourth in the recent Rancho Bernardo S. (G3) at Del Mar last time out, but she has trained well in the interim and could peak while making her third start off the bench. She is a Grade 3 winner on the surface, where the bay has finished first or second in all but one of her tries at Santa Anita. Mike Smith has the call aboard the late runner.

#1 Clearly Unhinged (4-1) faces a tall task in facing her elders for the initial time, but the three-year-old has a lot of ability and could be dangerous with a forward move in the dash. Trained by Michael McCarthy, the bay was last seen finishing a very good second in the Test S. (G1) at Saratoga, and the homebred is also 2-for-3 on this surface in advance of Friday, as well. Umberto Rispoli will ride and tuck the filly just in behind the pace of the race while saving ground throughout.
