How to bet the 2023 Eddie Logan Stakes
A well-matched field of nine juveniles will travel one mile on the Santa Anita lawn in Friday’s $100,000 Eddie Logan S. Conditioner Phil D’Amato has been a dominant figure on the turf scene in California for some time and has two major contenders in the cast, but I’ll look to upset his duo in this engagement.
Eddie Logan Wagers
$10 win/place/show: #6 Final Boss ($30)
$5 exacta key box: 6 with 7,9 ($20)
$.50-cent trifecta: key 6 with 2,5,7,8,9 ($10)
The John Sadler-trained #6 Final Boss (6-1) finished last in a dirt sprint at Del Mar on debut but took a major leap forward with the move to the lawn last time in graduating in a 6 1/2-furlong dash on the local green. By American Pharoah, the $450,000 yearling purchase was always prominent in his latest outing, and he did well to hold off a nice prospect late to make good in his first on the sod.
Final Boss stretches out in distance for the initial time against this cast and is bred to love the distance change. The chestnut colt has posted a slew of morning drills in preparation for this assignment, and the April foal has the gate presence to be involved from the outset of the contest, too. Frankie Dettori picks up the mount atop the Kentucky bred and will have him forcing the issue from the break at a square number.
Grade 3 victor #9 Stay Hot (7-2) displayed a nice turn of foot at Del Mar in his latest showing and could receive a contested pace at which to run at late for trainer Peter Eurton. The Summer Front colt is two-for-three since moving to the sod and graduated in style on this surface three back, and the $130,000 yearling buy will also benefit from having the outside post in the tilt, as well. Antonio Fresu will be in the silks atop the late runner.
Of the pair of D’Amato runners in the race, I prefer #7 Miracle Mark (7-2) who was last seen coming home a neck third at Del Mar in his latest venture. The dark bay son of Constitution has really elevated his game since moving to the green two prior and was a professional graduate in his lone try at Santa Anita to date, too. This February foal has displayed the ability to run from up close, or from off the pace, and the dark bay will be well placed turning for home with Diego Herrera retaining the mount. He looks like a top three must-use in the event.
