How to bet the 2024 Winning Colors

May 26th, 2024

A total of 11 fillies and mares will go six panels on the Churchill Downs dirt in Monday’s $250,000 Winning Colors S. (G3). With an abundance of early gas signed on, finding a one-run closing type might be a wise decision, and I’ve landed on #1 Royal Spa (8-1) for Rodolphe Brisset.

Winning Colors Wagers

  • $8 win/place/show #1 Royal Spa ($24)
  • 50-cent trifecta 1 with 3,5,11 with all ($13.50)
  • 50-cent trifecta 1 with all with 3,5,11 ($13.50)
  • 50-cent trifecta 3,5,11 with 1 with all ($13.50)

By Violence, Royal Spa was a debut juvenile winner beneath the Twin Spires in 2022 but had trouble stringing races together until this past winter/spring. The homebred was always highly thought of by her connections as she has faced some deep graded fields on a few occasions, and I believe that she has found her niche as a closing sprint type.

Royal Spa was a clear second behind Alva Starr in the American Beauty S. at Oaklawn Park in February, and followed that up with a rallying third in the Matron S. at the same venue, displaying fine late energy behind an accomplished top pair. In her most recent showing, the lass defeated 11 foes in a third-level allowance tilt at Keeneland by four widening lengths, which marked a third straight race where her Brisnet Speed number moved forward.

The four-year-old is 2-for-2 at Churchill, and she has finished in the top three in six of her seven lifetime races at one turn, as well, with her lone unplaced effort coming when fourth in the La Brea S. (G1) in December. While it’s never the most comfortable feeling sitting in last early in a sprint on the main oval, I like the chances of the filly if she avoids traffic turning for home under Ricardo Santana Jr.

#3 Clearly Unhinged (4-1), who was second in the Test S. (G1) in the summer; Sugar Swirl S. (G3) queen #5 Spirit Wind (3-1); and recent Roxelana S. runner-up #11 Dazzling Blue (5-2) are obvious inclusions for the vertical exotics, and I will use each of the three talented ladies on my tickets.
