How to bet the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

October 30th, 2019

A massive field of 15, with one on the also-eligibles list, will vie in Friday's $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Santa Anita. The ultra-competitive group features six horses coming off of stakes tallies in what is among the most attractive betting races of the weekend.

UPDATE: Vitalogy has been scratched, announced Friday morning.

Juvenile Turf Analysis:

Unbeaten #6 Graceful Kitten (15-1) has wired a pair of stakes fields in succession in Florida and will set sail in the early going, but he will be hounded by numerous runners from the break. I expect the pace to be strong and contested.

Deep-closing types #1 Our Country (15-1), #4 Decorated Invader (4-1), #5 Vitalogy (10-1) and #14 Hit the Road (10-1), could benefit from running at some tired legs inside the final furlong. And I will build my ambitious tickets around the quartet.

Wagers:

  • $1 Trifecta 1 with 4,13,14 with all = $36
  • $1 Trifecta 1 with all with 4,13,14 = $36
  • $1 Trifecta 4,13,14 with 1 with all = $36
  • $1 Trifecta 1with 4,5,14 with all = $36
  • $1 Trifecta 1 with all with 4,5,14 = $36
  • $1 Trifecta 4,5,14 with 1 with all = $36

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Contenders:

#1 OUR COUNTRY (15-1) -- Weaver trainee showed a nice turn of foot when third in the recent Pilgrim (G3) at Belmont Park. Precocious son of Constitution gets an excellent rider change to John Velazquez, and the colt should be saving ground throughout. Kentucky-bred will be a factor late with a clear voyage.

#2 STRUCTOR (5-1) -- Unblemished colt held on late in the Pilgrim to make it two-for-two for Chad Brown. $850,000 son of Palace Malice has trained well in the interim, and he will aim to give his conditioner a first-ever win in the event. Jose Ortiz picks up the mount.

#3 PEACE ACHIEVED (10-1) -- Bourbon (G3) victor moved his mark to a perfect three-for-three since adding blinkers and stretching out to route races on the lawn. Declaration of War colt has tactical speed and will never be far back beneath Miguel Mena.

#4 DECORATED INVADER (4-1) -- Clement pupil was visually impressive in taking the Summer (G1) over a yielding Woodbine turf course last time out. Kentucky-bred colt adds Lasix off of a Grade 1 win and lures Irad Ortiz off of another contender to ride. He makes a lot of sense with another forward move.

#5 VITALOGY (10-1) -- Euro invader has given a fine account of himself in a pair of runs in the states. Walsh pupil rallied from last to miss by a neck in the Bourbon from the 14 post most recently, and he draws a much more sensible post slot today. Grade 1-placed son of No Nay Never will be rallying from the back under Javier Castellano.

#6 GRACEFUL KITTEN (15-1) -- Kitten's Joy colt is perfect from three starts to date, including a pair of stakes wins in the Sunshine State. Bargain $8,500 purchase hasn't done much wrong to this stage of his development, but he faces a stiff test today under Berrios.

#7 ANDESITE (12-1) -- Pilgrim runner-up has won or placed in each of his three career starts to date for Brad Cox. Gray son of The Factor did tire in the stretch late last time which is a concern, but his consistency makes him a viable top-three contender.

#8 BILLY BATTS (20-1) -- City Zip youngster will remove the blinkers for his biggest test to date. Peter Miller pupil will need a lifetime best with the equipment change beneath Paco Lopez.

#9 GEAR JOCKEY (20-1) -- Maiden has run a pair of smart races since moving to the lawn and wouldn't be a total shock today. Rusty Arnold trainee was a good third in the Bourbon while close to an honest pace, and a move forward makes the son of Twirling Candy an exotics contender with Gaffalione coming back.

#10 WAR BEAST (20-1) -- Zuma Beach second ran his best race on this lawn but still looks to be in deep with this classy bunch. O'Neill trainee will be forwardly placed from the start.

#11 PROVEN STRATEGIES (30-1) -- Casse trainee is still a maiden following four lifetime starts, but his pair of stakes tries in advance of this race have been decent. Sky Mesa colt has trained well in preparation of the Juvenile Turf, though losing Gaffalione isn't a big positive.

#12 ARIZONA (5-2) -- Morning-line choice is one of two from the stable of Aidan O'Brien and gets Lasix for his U.S. debut. No Nay Never colt has placed behind the mighty Pinatubo in two straight Group 1 events, and he could prosper going beyond seven furlongs for the initial time. Group 2 hero will have Ryan Moore in the silks.

#13 FORT MYERS (12-1) -- Euro import was a smart stakes winner on the all-weather at Dundalk last time out. War Front colt has enjoyed a solid juvenile campaign while facing strong foes, and he has to be given a chance in his stateside bow under Wayne Lordan.

#14 HIT THE ROAD (10-1) -- Dan Blacker charge has caught the eye with a pair of impressive turf displays in California. The one-run closer was a going-away winner of the Zuma Beach on this green most recently. More Than Ready colt will be dangerous if able to overcome the widest post under Prat.

Also Eligible:

#15 DEVIANT (30-1) -- Dual stakes winner finished 11th in the Bourbon and he would be a surprise if he draws into the main body of the field.
