How to bet the Chandelier Stakes
A compact field of five juvenile fillies will travel 1 1/16 miles on the Santa Anita dirt in the $200,000 Chandelier (G2). The “Win and You’re In” challenge series affair will reward the first-place finisher with a berth in the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Keeneland.
Chandelier Analysis
#3 Varda will be the swiftest out of the gate in the Chandelier, and she will be tracked by #4 Illumination and #1 Princess Noor. The early tempo will be average.
Chandelier Contenders
#1 PRINCESS NOOR -- $1.35 million juvenile purchase by young sire Not This Time has been ultra-impressive from a pair of career tries for Baffert. Del Mar Debutante (G1) romper has yet to face a serious test, and the selection looms large in the small field coming in with a pair of fine morning moves on the surface. Victor Espinoza retains the mount.
#2 MAKE MISCHIEF -- Consistent daughter of Into Mischief has been first or second in each of her four tries to date for Casse. East Coast invader is twice graded stakes-placed, and she could earn some Grade 1 black-type with improvement on Saturday. Abel Cedillo has the assignment.
#3 VARDA -- Baffert second timer did nothing wrong in a powerful debut tally going six panels at Del Mar. $700,000 juvenile buy shows a trio of good morning drills in the interim, and she should handle the trip in her first route try beneath Van Dyke. Distorted Humor filly is the main danger to the favorite.
#4 ILLUMINATION -- Third from the Baffert shedrow was a distant third in the Debutante (G1) previously, but the $900,000 2-year-old shows a pair of fast morning drills since that performance. Medaglia d’Oro lass has flashed speed in each race to date, and the dark bay is cut out to prefer running a route of ground. Luis Saez inherits the ride.
#5 MISS COSTA RICA -- Baltas pupil impressed on the lawn at first asking with a game grassy score. $200,000 daughter of Hit A Bomb is a question mark at the distance at this stage of her development, but she has obvious talent and wouldn’t be a total surprise with a top-three finish. Flavien Prat will be in the controls.
