How to bet the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot

A dozen will run six furlongs on the Royal Ascot turf in Saturday’s $810,000 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Eng-G1). The turf sprint lacks a clear-cut favorite and will be a dynamite event from both a viewing and wagering standpoint.

Here’s the field:

#1 BOUND FOR NOWHERE – Wesley Ward trainee was a solid fourth in the Commonwealth Cup (Eng-G1) here in 2017 and most impressive rolling home a dominant winner in the Shakertown (G3) at Keeneland this campaign. The Factor colt is adept on firm or soft turf and brings speed to the fray.

#2 CITY LIGHT – Four-year-old brings fine form and Christophe Soumillon to the field, making him a logical contender. French-bred colt has a big turn of foot and wouldn’t surprise from off the pace. He might get a great set-up in the Jubilee.

#3 D’BAI – Godolphin longshot was a winner at Ascot against softer in 2017 and is in arguably his top form. Dubawi gelding was second to The Tin Man at Royal Windsor two back and found Group-3 glory most recently. Appleby trainee puts blinkers on today but he still needs better to top these.

#4 HARRY ANGEL – Multiple Group 1 hero is among the ones to beat for conditioner Clive Cox. Dark Angel colt has been second on three occasions over the Ascot turf and always runs his race. Bay could benefit from the ground and will get first run on the deep closers.

#5 INTELLIGENCE CROSS – Aidan O’Brien colt adds the hood but is trading at more than 100-1 in Europe. War Front colt would be a shocker for sure.

#6 LIBRISA BREEZE – Gray gelding was fourth in 2017 in this dash and scored in the British Champions Sprint (Eng-G1) at Ascot in the fall. Son of Mount Nelson does his best work on soft ground but likely won’t get his preferred footing today. Nonetheless, the six-year-old is capable with his best.

#7 MERCHANT NAVY – Group 1 victor made good in his European debut when best at The Curragh and looms a menacing figure. Fastnet Rock colt has room for improvement today as this was his target. Classy Aidan O’Brien pupil will aim to mow them down late in his final run before going to the breeding shed.

#8 PROJECTION – Son of Acclamation often comes up short but has placed in both of his previous Ascot assignments. Five-year-old might be a nice exotics figure at big odds. 

#9 REDKIRK WARRIOR – Aussie import rides in with a pair of Group 1 tallies in succession and has to be respected. He was a winner here earlier in his career (racing under the name of Redkirk). Seven-year-old gelding is popular with European bookmakers and Frankie Dettori taking the call is a huge coup.

#10 SIR DANCEALOT – Longshot has yet to prove to be up to this class. Gelding is also unplaced from two previous races on this green.

#11 SPIRIT OF VALOR – Speedy sort from the Aidan O’Brien shedrow will be forcing a fast tempo early with the blinkers on. Group 2 hero will be winging it early and his presence in the field enhances the chances of the late runners. 

#12 THE TIN MAN – Defending champ is not as sharp as he was entering this race in 2017, but he has to get respect. James Fanshawe charge loves this venue with a trio of wins from six local appearances. Bay has a big turn of foot and would be hard to deny with a good set-up.
