How to bet the Page Cortez Stakes

March 21st, 2025

An overflow field of 15 Cajun-bred fillies and mares will run 5 1/2 furlongs over the Fair Grounds green in Sunday’s $100,000 Page Cortez S. It’s difficult for me to narrow this field down to one or two contenders in the evenly-matched group, so I will include multiple runners in my plays.

Page Cortez Wagers

  • $5 exacta key box 10 with 3,6,12 ($30)
  • 50-cent trifecta 10,12 with 3,6,10,12 with all ($30)

#10 Tommie G (6-1) is a logical win threat in the heat for conditioner Patricia West. The four-year-old daughter of Court Vision has been second in each of her three tries on the local lawn and will cut back in distance following a stakes second going long last time out. Dark bay four-year-old has flashed good speed throughout her career and will never be far back against this group with Angel Suarez in the stirrups.

Steve Asmussen’s #12 Eye of the Pharaoh (12-1) is another on the cut back in trip and I feel that the chestnut will thrive going shorter for the initial time. The four-year-old chestnut is winless in three straight since bagging her first two races like a good thing, and she will be clear throughout with top pilot Jose Ortiz taking the reins. The filly will make one run in the stretch at a hefty price.

Stakes heroine #6 Classy Judy G (9-2), also from the barn of Patricia West, was a fleet allowance winner on the dirt in her latest outing and will be a pace factor if not more while making her second run on the green. Outwork filly is by a solid turf sire and has trained forwardly in advance of this heat. The four-year-old will have Marcelino Pedroza, Jr. in the silks and will be flashing her considerable early foot from the outset.

I have not given up on the chances of #3 From Scratch (10-1) handling the green and will include her for Grant Forster. Flameaway chestnut has been in good form since November and possesses the positional speed to be in the hunt early in this dash. She is bred to like the lawn and will make her second run with blinkers on beneath regular pilot David Cohen.
