How to bet the Peach Street Stakes

August 22nd, 2022

A big field of 11 will contest the $100,000 Peach Street S. at Presque Isle Downs on Monday. The route event on the Tapeta surface lacks a standout with the top two morning-line choices drawn widest in the field, so it seems like an appropriate spot to take a shot with an outsider.

Conditioner Norman Cash has a pair of major players in the field, in my opinion, including #1 Double Crown (8-1), who will be making his All-Weather debut in the event. Claimed for $40,000 in June, the five-year-old owns a score and two seconds in his four tries for this barn while facing some solid foes along the way.

The son of Bourbon Courage is a mystery on the course and something of a swing, but the late runner lands in a field full of pace and should get a nice setup while saving ground throughout. J. D. Acosta will be in the silks and will ask the Maryland-bred for his best approaching the stretch.

The Gerald Bennett-trained #10 Carpenters Call (5-2) made his lone local try a winning one when impressively dominating an allowance field by 5 1/4 lengths two races back. Third in the grassy Appleton S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park in April, the four-year-old son of Tourist has obvious ability and gave a nice account of himself when finishing 4 1/2 lengths back in the United Nations S. (G1) at Monmouth Park most recently. The Kentucky-bred has room for improvement with just 10 lifetime tries under his belt to date, as well. Samy Camacho will guide the Glenn Wismer trainee.

#4 Declared (10-1) has earned each of his five lifetime victories on the surface and brings good form to the field for conditioner John Bourke. The Hard Spun gelding will make his stakes debut in this offering, and while he might be a cut below a few in the field, I do feel like he is going too well at the moment to ignore. The price will be right on the Kentucky-bred.

Local stakes winner #11 Surly Furious (3-1) and #7 Nice Ace (9-2) will also make my tickets.
