How to bet the Regret Stakes

June 26th, 2020

A baker’s dozen of sophomore fillies will travel 1 1/8 miles on the turf in Saturday’s $100,000 Regret (G3). The grassy test could be the best betting event on a fantastic card at Churchill Downs.

Regret Analysis

The pace could be moderate with #4 In Good Spirits establishing the edge from the gate. #2 His Glory, #9 Eve of War, and #11 Witez are also expected to be forwardly placed.

Regret Contenders

#1 DOMINGA -- Stakes victress draws well along the fence for Brad Cox. Ghostzapper lass made a belated run to be sixth in the recent Tepin S., and she will need improvement to challenge for the win against a deep cast. Shaun Bridgmohan will be in the silks.

#2 HIS GLORY -- Joe Sharp claim was a game winner over $50,000 foes on the course in her latest offering. Mineshaft lass took to the green in her grassy debut, but she will have to move forward to challenge this bunch from off the pace.

#3 STUNNING SKY -- Capable late runner makes her local debut following four straight turf outings at Gulfstream Park for Maker. Declaration of War sophomore smoked a bullet half-mile in her most recent morning move, and she is not without a chance if she thrives on the Churchill turf under Gaffalione.

#4 IN GOOD SPIRITS -- Stall charge led to the top of the lane prior to registering a solid fourth-place result behind the fantastic Sharing last out. Kentucky-bred bay broke her maiden locally, and she could get brave with a clear early lead in her second start of 2020. Miguel Mena will guide the top 3 contender.

#5 CRYSTAL CLIFFS -- French import was an impressive allowance winner on this turf oval when making her U.S. debut for Motion. Canford Cliffs filly has the look of a very nice prospect, and I consider her to be a must use in this affair with John Velazquez returning to the silks.

#6 MICHELINE -- Godolphin homebred was much the best in annexing the Honey Ryder S. at Gulfstream Park in advance of the Regret. Stidham pupil has not been super consistent to this stage of her development, though the addition of blinkers four prior have moved her forward. Bravo will guide the late runner.

#7 EDGEE ANGEL -- Simms trainee rallied from well back to be third in a recent local allowance tilt, but she will need better to impact the field from well back on Saturday.

#8 WEXX -- Bay filly from the Larry Jones barn didn’t show much in a local allowance tilt in preparation of the Regret, and she would be a surprise on Saturday having never hit the board in three tries on the Churchill sod.

#9 EVE OF WAR -- Chestnut from the Pletcher barn led at every call in her turf debut two back, but she was through early in the Tepin S. most recently. Sophomore has good early speed though, and improvement is expected with Geroux picking up the mount.

#10 HARVEY’S LIL GOIL -- Mott-trained stakes heroine gets back on the green, her first turf appearance since a rallying fourth in her debut offering last fall. American Pharoah filly is bred to handle the grass, and she could be very interesting for a top turf outfit. Martin Garcia has the call.

#11 WITEZ -- Ian Wilkes trainee put in a fine prep run when second to the top pick on the surface in her third performance of 2020. More Than Ready filly has tactical presence and could carve out a nice trip to the top of the lane while always in the clear. Chris Landeros will ride the gimmicks player.

#12 PASS THE PLATE -- Consistent filly has won or placed in all but one of her seven lifetime showings for McGee. Tepin S. third won on the course at two, and the daughter of Temple City will be doing her best work in the stretch beneath Leparoux.

#13 HENDY WOODS -- Unbeaten daughter of Uncle Mo makes her local debut following a pair of strong showings at Fair Grounds. Casse trainee gets a tough draw being widest of all in the big field, but she has done nothing wrong to date and deserves a chance, nonetheless. Declan Carroll will be in the controls.
