How to bet the San Clemente Stakes

July 23rd, 2020

A big field of 11 sophomore fillies will run one mile on the Del Mar turf in Saturday’s $150,000 San Clemente Stakes (G2).

San Clemente Analysis

A trio of fillies will be forwardly placed while establishing an honest early tempo. #6 Cheermeister is expected to lead the way, with #1 She’s So Special and #3 Laura’s Light in close attendance from the opening bell.

San Clemente Contenders

#1 SHE’S SO SPECIAL -- Hard Spun filly was victorious in a pair of turf dashes at Santa Anita leading up to the San Clemente. Bay was unplaced in a lone prior run at the distance, but she draws well inside and her 103 Brisnet Speed figure tops the cast. Flavien Prat riding adds to the appeal.

#2 LAZY DAISY -- Grade 2 heroine has been dusted in three straight on the dirt and makes her grass debut on Saturday. Paynter lass faces a tall task in her current form cycle for O’Neill.

#3 LAURA’S LIGHT -- Two-time Grade 3 vixen is the likely one to beat for Miller. Daughter of Constitution sports a 4-3-1-0 mark on the green and was a solid second in the Jimmy Durante (G3) in her lone local showing. Kentucky-bred will be tough to topple with her best performance under Cedillo.

#4 OVER ATTRACTED -- Carla Gaines pupil was runner-up facing allowance foes in her stateside debut. Atreides filly has come back with four strong morning drills in the interim, and she could be a threat late with a move forward in her second for the barn. Mike Smith retains the ride.

#5 CROUGHAVOUKE -- Top pick put in a big late run to be a close third in the recent Honeymoon (G3) at Santa Anita. Mullins trained daughter of Dandy Man is a one-run closer who is always at the mercy of the pace, though I expect her to get honest fractions to rally into in her third try of 2020. Regular pilot Rispoli stays.

#6 CHEERMEISTER -- Florida invader has amassed a pair of Grade 3 victories this campaign and will hope to make good in her Golden State debut. Kentucky-bred sophomore comes in fresh and will be sent from the break as the expected pacesetter under Victor Espinoza. Bodemeister filly will be stubborn late if she clears early on.

#7 LITTLE BIRD -- Free Eagle filly from the Baltas barn will aim for her first her initial graded tally off the short absence. Irish-bred is training well as of late and will be closer to the pace on this occasion compared to her previous outing. Bay has intrigue at a price.

#8 MIND OUT -- $850,000 daughter of Tapit was a debut victress on the course and has won or placed in each of her four career tries in advance of the San Clemente. Chestnut has the tactical speed to get first run on the closing types, and the Kentucky-bred rates a chance under the guidance of Brice Blanc.

#9 WARREN’S SHOWTIME -- Versatile California-bred has earned stakes wins on both the turf and dirt for Lewis. Daughter of Clubhouse Ride graduated on the sod at Del Mar, and her latest tally in the Melair S. was arguably her top performance to date. Regular jock Velez stays in the silks.

#10 GUITTY -- Powell pupil is a dual winner on the surface from a trio of local runs. Dark bay has gone unplaced in her pair of outings this campaign, but she is training well and could close for a share if the pace backs up in the stretch.

#11 APPLECROSS -- European import makes her 3-year-old debut in a tough spot for Baltas. The bay Sir Prancealot filly is stakes placed on the local green, but she draws widest of all and will need a lifetime best to come out on top in this affair.
