How to bet the Super High 5 carryovers at Gulfstream and Santa Anita
Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares tickets for a pair of Sunday Super High 5 carryovers at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita.
Gulfstream Park, Race 1: $7,376 Super High 5 carryover (12:50 p.m. ET)
This $25,000 maiden claimer will take place over 5 1/2 furlongs on the Tapeta track, setting the stage for a tricky handicapping challenge. Eight horses have been entered, and since the Tapeta tends to play slowly (and in favor of stretch runners), stamina figures to be placed at a premium. This may lend an edge to #5 High Yield Kitten (3-1).
A son of two-time leading sire Kitten’s Joy (whose progeny win at a lofty average distance of 7.8 furlongs), High Yield Kitten has placed on both dirt and turf while competing admirably against tougher company at Gulfstream Park. His career-best 80 Brisnet Speed rating came two starts back, when he ran third in a $35,000 maiden claimer sprinting five furlongs over the Gulfstream main track. A repeat should be sufficient to land High Yield Kitten in the winner’s circle while dropping in class.
Underneath, we have to respect #1 Carrots Or Carats (7-2). The Ralph Nicks trainee failed to challenge against $35,000 company at Gulfstream last winter, but he recently returned from a seven-month break to finish third in a $12,500 maiden claimer, earning a 79 Brisnet Speed rating. Nicks has already saddled a winner and a runner-up from his first two starts over the Gulfstream Tapeta, so we’ll cross our fingers and hope Carrots Or Carats can produce a similar effort while switching surfaces.

Santa Anita, Race 1: $10,460 Super High 5 carryover (4 p.m. ET)
Nine horses will sprint five furlongs on turf in this maiden special weight for juvenile fillies. Among the experienced runners, #8 Sugar Sugar (5-2) is a standout. The daughter of versatile sire Twirling Candy has finished third, fourth, and second in her first three starts on dirt and turf, earning Brisnet Speed ratings of 77, 80, and 72. Considering none of her rivals have posted a figure higher than 70, Sugar Sugar’s A-game should put her in the hunt for victory. It’s worth noting trainer Peter Miller wins at a 27% rate with horses dropping blinkers, as Sugar Sugar will do on Sunday.
But don’t sleep on the chances of the first-time starters #6 Phenom (4-1) and #9 Loma Vista (4-1). Both are daughters of Midnight Storm (who sires 17% winners from first-time starters), and both are trained by Phil D’Amato, who has compiled a promising 4-2-1-0 (50%) record debuting juveniles in turf sprints at Santa Anita since 2016. Of the pair, we’ll give preference to Phenom, who has compiled a slightly sharper work tab than her stablemate.
Let’s bet Phenom on top, key Sugar Sugar for second place, and emphasize Loma Vista underneath in a trio of Super High 5 tickets:
