How to bet the turf stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 10

October 9th, 2021

A pair of Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” stakes races on the turf are part of an important Sunday card at Keeneland.

Race 8 – Indian Summer S.

A total of 10 juveniles will dash 5 1/2 furlongs on the green in a competitive heat. #7 Averly Jane (4-5) has dominated three fields by a combined 19 1/4 lengths to date for Wesley Ward, but I can’t settle for a short price on the morning-line choice. The Midshipman filly has never run on the sod, and she faces the boys while also removing blinkers coming off a daylight victory. I think that there is enough reason to try to beat the unbeaten filly.

Her stablemate #2 Kaufymaker (7-2) will get the nod. Chestnut daughter of Jimmy Creed finished a creditable third in the Juvenile Sprint S. at Kentucky Downs last time, which followed a positive performance in a deep cast at Royal Ascot two prior. The March foal aired on debut at this locale in the spring, and she seems poised to be a major presence from the break on Sunday. Irad Ortiz Jr. will be in the stirrups.

Wager

  • $20 win and place #2 Kaufymaker ($40)
  • $1 trifecta key 2 with 1,4,6,7,10 ($20)

Race 10 – Bourbon S. (G2)

An overflow field of 16 youngsters signed on for the 1 1/16-mile endeavor. I will center many of my plays around #13 Lucky Boss (8-1), who will be making his turf debut in this offering. The bay son of strong lawn sire Street Boss has the pedigree to relish the green, and I also believe that the stretch-out in distance will benefit the improving prospect. Irad Ortiz picking up the mount is positive, as well.

Juvenile Mile S. victor #12 Tiz the Bomb (3-1), Juvenile Sprint S. star #10 Red Danger (7-2), and Mark Casse’s #6 Credibility (20-1) are a trio of contenders that I will dabble with in the exotics.

Wager

  • $15 win and place #13 Lucky Boss ($30)
  • 50-cent trifecta 13 with 6,10,12 with all ($18)
  • 50-cent trifecta 13 with all with 6,10,12 ($18)
