How to bet Turfway's mandatory-payout $37,564 Pick 6 carryover
The Turfway Park meet concludes on Saturday with an action-packed card featuring half a dozen stakes worth a combined $1.7 million.
The $600,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) on the Road to the Kentucky Derby is the sporting highlight, but the betting highlight is the mandatory payout of a $37,564 carryover in the Single 6 Jackpot.
The 20-cent Pick 6 wager gets underway in Race 7 (post time 3:43 p.m. ET) and spans the six stakes. Let’s take a race-by-race look at the sequence and plan out a play:
Race 7: Latonia S. (1 1/16 miles on Tapeta)
#4 Breeze Rider (2-1) is undefeated and unchallenged in two starts at Turfway, both against stakes company. She was particularly impressive in the one-mile Wintergreen S. on Feb. 26, pressing the early pace before taking command to win easily by 5 3/4 lengths.
Breeze Rider will be tough to beat if she brings her A-game, but we’ll also use three-time graded stakes winner #1 Crazy Beautiful (5-2). She kicked off 2022 with a fourth-place finish behind champion Letruska in Gulfstream Park’s Royal Delta S. (G3) and is eligible to move forward in her second start of the season.
Race 8: Rushaway S. (1 1/16 miles on Tapeta)
#12 Erase (3-1) won the one-mile Leonatus S. over this track two starts back, and he exits a solid fifth-place finish in Turfway’s John Battaglia Memorial S. on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Saturday’s field should be easier for Erase to handle, but breaking from the far outside post could be a tricky task for the speedy colt.
#1 Grael (7-2), third in the John Battaglia Memorial, is an obvious alternative while starting from the rail post. We’ll also use #5 Tommy Bee (7-2), a turf horse shipping in off a second-place finish in the Black Gold S. at Fair Grounds. And for a price play, we’ll consider #8 Kitodan (15-1), winner of two straight on turf and Tapeta at Gulfstream Park.
Race 9: Animal Kingdom S. (six furlongs on Tapeta)
#7 Rotknee (3-1) has won three straight sprints in gate-to-wire fashion, including the Damon Runyon S. at Aqueduct. The only problem? He’s never run on anything but dirt.
What are mandatory-payout carryovers, and why are they valuable?

If the surface switch trips up Rotknee, look for #1 Nobals (3-1) to steal the show. The Larry Rivelli trainee is a nose away from being undefeated in four starts on synthetic, including a gate-to-wire win in the Jan. 8 Turfway Prevue S. Rivelli is winning at a 32% rate this meet, and leading jockey Gerardo Corrales is named to ride, stamping Nobals as a serious win threat.
Race 10: Kentucky Cup Classic S. (1 1/8 miles on Tapeta)
#2 Visitant (2-1) won this race last year and boasts a 6-for-7 record over the Turfway Tapeta. He was brilliant in the six-furlong Big Daddy S. at Turfway last month, winning by 5 1/4 lengths in the remarkably quick time of 1:08.33.
Visitant figures to sit a perfect trip stalking modest fractions and looks tough to beat, though we’ll also include his stablemate #12 Beatbox (7-2), whose 3-for-3 record at Turfway includes an easy score in the 1 1/16-mile Dust Commander S.
Race 11: Bourbonette Oaks (1 1/16 miles on Tapeta)
#8 Sandstone (5-2) showed flashes of brilliance last season, most notably crushing the Rags to Riches S. at Churchill Downs by a double-digit margin. But since Sandstone has never run over a synthetic track and is returning from a lengthy layoff, we’ll consider the possibility of proven Tapeta performers like Turfway allowance winner #2 Let’s Be Clear (12-1) or Woodbine’s Mazarine S. (G3) winner #7 Mrs. Barbara (5-1) stealing the show.
Race 12: Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3, 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta)
Three-time stakes winner #7 Tiz the Bomb (2-1) won the 1 1/16-mile John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway by a neck over #2 Stolen Base (7-2) last month, but their edge over Saturday’s field appears slim on paper. #5 Tawny Port is 2-for-2 at Turfway and exits a solid fifth-place finish in the Risen Star S. (G2); he can challenge while returning to Tapeta. Classy turf campaigner #1 Royal Spirit (10-1) also has upset potential after finishing second by a neck in the Kitten’s Joy S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park.
- 20-cent Pick 6: 1,4 with 1,5,8,12 with 1,7 with 2,12 with 2,7,8 with 1,2,5,7 ($76.80)
Good luck!
