How to bet with, and against, Abscond in the Marie G. Krantz Memorial

January 21st, 2022

A full field of 12 fillies and mares will vie in Saturday’s $100,000 Marie G. Krantz Memorial at Fair Grounds. The 1 1/16-mile turf test is led by Grade 1 heroine #1 Abscond (3-1) from the barn of Eddie Kenneally. The Blame mare has been facing high-quality opposition for the duration of her career and will be awfully tough as the class of the cast.

Abscond has raced on seven different turf courses in her last seven outings, and Saturday will mark the local debut for the five-year-old. The bay has plenty of reason for optimism in the affair, but reasons for concern as well. She has settled for minor awards in six of her last 10 performances, with her most recent tally coming in her juvenile campaign.

The Kentucky-bred received the rail post for this contest, and she will never be too far back with the positional speed that she possesses. Adam Beschizza will guide the morning-line choice.

#5 Summer in Saratoga (7-2), one of two in the field for conditioner Joe Sharp, rates a big chance with her best effort. The bay daughter of Hard Spun is a two-time winner on the surface and  comes in with victories in three of her four most recent assignments, including a fine win in the Blushing K. D. S. here last time out. Bred in Kentucky, the six-year-old mare will be closing best of all in the stretch with Corey Lanerie back in the silks.

The wildcard in the field is #8 Janelle Monae (8-1), who brings a perfect 4-for-4 mark to the affair. Now in the hands of Brad Cox, the Brazilian import is a three-time Group 1 vixen who could be any kind while making her first run in the states. The Agnes Gold five-year-old is training well and will have the services of pilot Joel Rosario.

#10 Pass the Plate (6-1) is far from a win machine, but the Paul McGee pupil often runs her race and picks up a lot of minor awards. A stakes victress on the surface, the five-year-old daughter of Temple City moves back to the green off the layoff and will be rallying late at a decent price as a top-three contender. Marcelino Pedroza has the call.
