How to bet with, and against, Rougir in the New York Stakes

A stout field of seven fillies and mares will travel 1 1/4 miles over the Belmont inner turf in Friday’s lucrative $750,000 New York S. (G1). Four that are entered for the grassy affair will be saddled by conditioner Chad Brown, who has sent out three of the past six winners of the event. And he has the one to beat once again this campaign in Group 1 victress #2 Rougir (6-5).
Purchased for more than $3.3 million in December, the classy four-year-old was unplaced in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) in her U. S. debut, but she showed her talent when dominating the Beaugay S. (G3) on this course to commence her 2022 season.
The Territories filly figures to improve in her second try of the year at a distance that is more suited to her. I love the stretch out in trip for the race on Friday, and it will take a pretty good performance to upend the French import in this spot with Flavien Prat riding.
#5 Bleecker Street (5-2) is the obvious main danger to the morning-line choice. The Brown trainee brings an unbeaten six-for-six mark to the table and will be a worthy opponent in the affair. The gray Quality Road filly has never raced at 10 furlongs and is facing her sternest test to date, but she has aced every test to this stage of her development, and her potent late kick should translate well to the Belmont green. Irad Ortiz riding is a bonus.
In a race lacking pace, Brown’s #3 Virginia Joy (3-1) could be the recipient of a clear early edge if McCarthy asks her for speed soon after the break. Fourth in this race in 2022, the $1.1 million purchase is two-for-two this campaign and seems poised for a good performance as a dual winner on the oval. The five-year-old daughter of Soldier Hollow doesn’t own the same turn of foot as the aforementioned pair, but she figures to get the jump on those turning for home.
