How to bet with, and against, Sconsin in the Chicago Stakes

June 24th, 2022

A fantastic field of seven fillies and mares will go postward in Saturday’s $200,000 Chicago S. (G3) at Churchill Downs. The seven-furlong affair has a cast worthy of a Grade 1 race and figures to be a thrilling feature beneath the Twin Spires.

Greg Foley’s #7 Sconsin (2-1), winner of the recent Winning Colors S. (G3) on the surface while making her 2022 debut, is a deserving morning-line choice in the heat. By Include, the mare is a five-time winner in Louisville and has obvious room for improvement while making just her second start since September.

The five-year-old has tactical speed combined with a strong turn of foot, and the outside draw should ensure her of having clear sailing throughout. Mitchell Murrill picks up the mount atop the formidable homebred.

I like and respect every contender in the field to some extent, but #3 Lady Rocket (5-2) stands out most as a potential lone speed play. Conditioned by Brad Cox, the Tale of the Cat five-year-old gets a hint of class relief after facing some tough foes over muddy surfaces in two tries this season, and the mare could control things from the start on Saturday. The speedy dark bay will be sent from the break by Ricardo Santana Jr.

#4 Bell’s The One (7-2) is a genuine deep closer who is always worth including for trainer Neil Pessin. The $1.6 million earner sports a solid 9-4-3-0 mark at Churchill Downs and might peak in her third try of the season. The Majesticperfection six-year-old has trained well as of late and will be doing her best work in the final furlong beneath Corey Lanerie.

Godolphin homebred #2 Pennybaker (8-1) is the wildcard in the cast for Michael Stidham. The Medaglia d’Oro filly was winless in six turf runs to commence her career, but she has won five straight since, led by a tally in the Heavenly Cause S. at Laurel Park when making her U.S. debut. The dark bay could be any kind in her second run on U.S. soil with James Graham in the stirrups.
