Picks and plays

Canterbury Park, Race 1: $7,500 claiming (six furlongs, 6:10 p.m. ET)

#3 Poco Suenos (8-5) owns the best recent Brisnet Speed ratings in the field and enters in hot form, with three wins in her last four starts over a variety of distances and surfaces.

Four starts back, Poco Suenos was much the best in a 6 1/2-furlong, $3,500 claiming sprint at Turf Paradise, where she tracked the pace and took command to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

Poco Suenos was recently claimed by high-percentage trainer Justin Evans, who strikes at a 28% rate with new claiming acquisitions.

Jockey Luis Negron (a 31% winner when he teams with Evans) is named to ride Poco Suenos at Canterbury, which sets the stage for another winning effort.

#1 Sierrita (2-1) and #2 Distinct Approval (4-1) can complete the trifecta.

$15 trifecta: 3 with 1,2 with 1,2 ($30)

Indiana Grand, Race 8: Allowance (six furlongs, 6:02 p.m. ET)

#9 Whistlin’ Dixie (2-5) is the morning-line favorite, after she finished fifth in a $20,000 optional-claiming allowance sprint at Oaklawn Park. But the 76 Brisnet Speed rating she earned isn’t a standout against Wednesday’s field.

#10 Tappin Into Summer (8-1) posted a 77 when she dominated an April 19 maiden special weight at Indiana Grand by 11 3/4 lengths. She subsequently misfired when she finished last in a six-furlong allowance at Churchill Downs, but that defeat came over a sloppy track. Tappin Into Summer hasn’t cracked the trifecta in two starts over wet footing, but boasts a win and a second in two starts over a fast track.

Tappin Into Summer will face easier company Wednesday, and if she gets a dry track to work with, she can spring a surprise.

We’ll bet Tappin Into Summer to win (to capitalize on the Midweek Bet Back offer) and play her over Whistlin’ Dixie in the exacta.

$10 to win on #10 Tappin Into Summer
$5 exacta: 10 with 9
Total: $15

Thistledown, Race 4: Allowance (six furlongs, 2:20 p.m. ET)

#7 Sammy’s Sister (5-2) hasn’t missed the trifecta in six starts, including four at Thistledown. She was in particularly strong form last fall, when she wrapped up her juvenile season with a 1 3/4-length triumph in the Glacial Princess S. at Mahoning Valley. That victory produced an 82 Brisnet Speed rating, one of the best figures in Wednesday’s field.

High-percentage trainer Jeffrey Radosevich is a 25% winner with horses who return from layoffs of 90 days or more, and jockey Luis Rivera (a 31% winner when he teams with Radosevich) is named to ride.

If Sammy’s Sister improves at all in her sophomore debut, she can roll home on top as the favorite.

We’ll use #4 One Glamorous Gal (7-2) to complete a cold exacta.

$20 to win on #7 Sammy’s Sister
$5 exacta: 7 with 4
Total: $25

Carryover watch

Penn National, Race 3: $220,636 Super High Five jackpot

Easily the richest carryover up for grabs Wednesday is the $220,636 “Hollywood High Five” jackpot at Penn National. But of course, the jackpot for the 20-cent wager will only pay out if a unique winning ticket is sold.

The key to betting Wednesday’s Hollywood High Five (offered in a six-furlong, $8,000 claiming test) might be to oppose morning-line favorite #9 Dirty Girl (3-1). She has rattled off three straight victories at Penn National for trainer Tim Kreiser, but Dirty Girl has been competing against easier $4,000 and $5,000 claiming company, and the Brisnet Speed ratings she has posted (in the 66-68 range) look a little light.

#5 Gizmo Flash (7-2) has thrown down figures of 77 and 78 in her last two starts at Penn National. After she led all the way to dominate a $5,000 claiming race by 6 1/4 lengths, Gizmo Flash narrowly failed to wire an $8,000 event, when she came up a head short at the finish line. Hot jockey Andrew Wolfsont will take over riding duties for Wednesday’s assignment, and since 40% of six-furlong sprints at Penn National are won in gate-to-wire fashion, Gizmo Flash figures to be formidable on the front end.

Let’s play a pair of Hollywood High Five tickets, with Gizmo Flash keyed on top. Underneath, we’ll strongly emphasize #6 Note to Selfie (8-1) and #7 Miss Dillingham (9-2).

Note to Selfie has posted five straight Brisnet Speed ratings in the 73-79 range and will make her first start since being claimer by trainer Craig Miller, a 20% winner with new claiming acquisitions. Miss Dillingham enters off Brisnet Speed ratings of 74 and 78, the latter earned when she finished just a head behind Gizmo Flash in the above-mentioned $8,000 claiming race.

20-cent Hollywood High Five: 5 with 6,7 with 6,7 with 1,2,3 with ALL ($6)
20-cent Hollywood High Five: 5 with 6,7 with 1,2,3 with 6,7 with ALL ($6)
Total: $12

Good luck!
