Kentucky Derby Alumni Update for Dec. 16

December 16th, 2021

With the winter racing meets ramping up and top horses pointing for their winter campaigns, many Kentucky Derby and Oaks alumni are returning to the track. At Aqueduct, Fair Grounds, Gulfstream, and Oaklawn, they are in action, so let’s check in on their plans!

  • Super Stock (16th, 2021 Kentucky Derby) returned to Oaklawn, where he is a G1 winner. He contested the one and one sixteenth-mile Poinsettia Stakes on December 11. Stalking in range, he made his bid between horses in the lane, but was outkicked by Last Samurai and finished second, beaten three quarters of length behind the winner.
  • Bourbonic (13th, 2021 Kentucky Derby) returns on December 19 at Aqueduct in the nine-furlong Queens County Stakes. He drew post three in a nine-horse field; this is his first start since a fourth-place finish in the Discovery Stakes at Aqueduct last month. Though he remains in ungraded company, this will be a new test. He faces older horses for the first time, and his foes include hardy runners such as You're to Blame, Bal Harbour, and Forewarned.
  • Necker Island (9th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) is entered to contest the Tenacious Stakes at Fair Grounds on December 26. It will be his first start since a second-place finish in an allowance at Churchill Downs on November 21. He drew post two in a field of ten and will face foes including Pirate's Punch and Chess Chief.
  • Sole Volante (11th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) stays on grass for the nine-furlong Fort Lauderdale (G2) at Gulfstream on December 18. He drew the fifth post in a field of 12. It will be his first start since finishing sixth in the Sycamore (G3) at Keeneland Oct. 22.
  • South Bend (15th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) won an allowance on the Churchill Downs dirt last time, and remains on the main for the Harlan's Holiday (G3) at Gulfstream Park on December 18. The race covers 1 1/16 miles, and he drew the fifth gate in a six-horse field that features Fearless and the 2020 Queen's Plate winner Mighty Heart.
  • Long Range Toddy (16th, 2019 Kentucky Derby) contests a six-furlong allowance sprint at Oaklawn on December 18. Drawn in the third post in a field of eight, he faces a tough lineup including multiple graded stakes winner C Z Rocket.
  • Coach (9th, 2021 Kentucky Oaks) makes her first start since the Oaks on December 17 at Oaklawn. She returns in a one and one sixteenth-mile allowance, and drew the outside in a seven-horse field that also includes graded stakes-placed Jilted Bride and Oaklawn horse-for-course W W Fitzy.
  • Dream Marie (8th, 2020 Kentucky Oaks), most recently second in the Love Sign Stakes at Colonial Downs in August, returns to her Gulfstream roots in the Rampart Stakes on December 18. Covering a mile on the dirt, the race drew a field of six, with Dream Marie drawn on the outside and named the morning line favorite.
