Kentucky Derby alumni update for Nov. 30

Many runners from the Kentucky Derby and Oaks, both this year and in past years, returned to action during the holiday week of racing.  Find out right here how they did, as well as who to expect in major races over the next week!

• Midnight Bourbon (6th, 2021 Kentucky Derby), sent off the narrow favorite in the Clark (G1) on November 26, set the early pace. However, Maxfield overhauled him midstretch, and Midnight Bourbon flattened late to finish third, 3 1/2 lengths behind Maxfield.

• Bourbonic (13th, 2021 Kentucky Derby), making his first start since running fifth in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), contested the Discovery (G3) on November 27, going 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct. It was his first start at the Big A since winning the Wood (G2) in April. Settled at the rear in the field of five, he did not fine the same kick, and finished a well-beaten fourth behind Miles D.
• Super Stock (16th, 2021 Kentucky Derby) got a confidence-builder in the Zia Park Derby on November 23. Stalking the pace outside of Pirate Junction, Super Stock engaged him in a duel into the far turn, fought with the rallying Tesoro into the lane, kicked away midstretch, and held by 1 1/4 lengths.
• Necker Island (9th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) was sent off favored November 25 in the Thanksgiving Classic, a six-furlong sprint over the Fair Grounds dirt. Breaking from the rail, he was in tight early and settled toward the rear. He took up behind another horse into the far turn, swung four wide into the lane, and kept on with interest, though crossed the wire fourth, 3 1/4 lengths behind frontrunning winner Just Might.

• Like her Steve Asmussen stablemate Super Stock, Pauline’s Pearl (8th, 2021 Kentucky Oaks) also got back into winning form in the Land of Enchantment. Sent off the 6-5 second choice in the Zia Park Oaks on November 23, she chased midfield behind odds-on Lady Mystify. She started to advance into the far turn, descended three deep in upper stretch, seized the lead near the sixteenth, and won by 1 1/2 lengths over the favorite.
• Crazy Beautiful (10th, 2021 Kentucky Oaks), favored at 7-5 in the Comely (G3) November 26 at Aqueduct, settled in the rear flight for much of the 1 1/8 miles. She swung out and began to gain approaching the quarter, but longshot Bees and Honey got the jump. Crazy Beautiful chased on for third, 3 1/4 lengths behind Bees and Honey.

• Code of Honor (2nd, 2019 Kentucky Derby) and Ny Traffic (8th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) are expected to return Saturday, December 4 in the Cigar Mile (G1). Code of Honor, expected to begin at stud at Lane’s End in 2022, last ran second in the Fayette (G2) at Keeneland. Ny Traffic most recently got a confidence-builder against New York-breds, winning the Hudson H. last month.
