Kentucky Derby Alumni update for Oct. 25, 2021

Though we are less than two weeks from the Breeders' Cup, where several Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks horses are expected to appear, the calendar has still been busy for several other alumni within the last week. Let's check in with a few who ran this weekend, and several more who are ready to make the weekend before Breeders' Cup anything but quiet!

• Sole Volante (11th, 2020 Kentucky Derby), as expected, contested the Sycamore (G3) Oct. 22 at Keeneland. He settled in last in a race where each of the top three horses were close up from the start. He eventually split the field of 11, making some late improvement to get up for sixth, 7 1/2 lengths behind winner Spooky Channel.

• Soup and Sandwich (19th, 2021 Kentucky Derby) made his first start since the Kentucky Derby, returning at Keeneland in the seven-furlong Perryville S. Asked up the inside but outjumped to the lead, Soup and Sandwich tracked the leading line but began to flatten on the turn. He crossed the wire ninth and last, 18 1/2 lengths behind winner He'smyhoneybadger.
• As expected, Crazy Beautiful (10th, 2021 Kentucky Oaks) has entered the Valley View (G3) Oct. 29 at Keeneland, her first turf race since her winning debut almost 16 months ago. She drew post 3 in an overflow field of turf fillies: 14, plus two on the also-eligible list. Crazy Beautiful has won three of her last four, all on dirt: the Summertime Oaks (G2), the Delaware Oaks (G3), and the Seneca Overnight S.
• A pair of Kentucky Derby alumni are expected to show up Oct. 30 at Keeneland for the Fayette (G2), at 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. Major Fed (10th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) has won two straight in allowance company, and hopes to extend that win streak in his first stakes attempt since his Run for the Roses. And Code of Honor (second, 2019 Kentucky Derby) looks to rebound from his fourth-place finish in the Woodward (G1) on Oct. 2.
• Oct. 31 at Santa Anita, Rock Your World (17th, 2021 Kentucky Derby) is expected to make his first start since running second to Medina Spirit in the Shared Belief Aug. 29. That return will come in the Twilight Derby (G2), his first turf start since early in his career. He started his career with a maiden win and a stakes win on the Santa Anita lawn, though switched to dirt for the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and had remained on the main after that victory.
