Kentucky Derby BRIS Speed Rating Report: Los Alamitos Futurity

Solomini finished first by nearly a length but lost the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) via disqualification. It certainly was a tough one for backers as the interference did not affect who ultimately won, but a case could be made Solomini cost Instilled Regard second when repeatedly bumping his rival in the stretch.

Instilled Regard, who was off at 17-1 odds, made a nice run into contention rounding the far turn and collared 1-2 favorite McKinzie in upper stretch. Solomini, the 8-5 second choice, rallied to make it three across the track and it was anybody’s race to win inside the sixteenth pole. Solomini eventually got the upper-hand late, grinding his way to prevail going away under the wire, but he did not maintain a straight path.

McKinzie, who wound up gamely outfinishing Instilled Regard by a head, drifted out slightly in upper stretch and bumped Instilled Regard, who got bounced around pretty good through the exciting stretch drive, but the stewards decided to keep McKinzie up and demote stablemate Solomini to third.

Bob Baffert wound up winning his 10th Los Alamitos Futurity.

Solomini confirmed himself as a very serious contender for the first leg of the Triple Crown, backing up the class he displayed finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and FrontRunner (G1). Regally-bred for a 1 ¼-mile distance and in the right hands with four-time Kentucky Derby winner Baffert, the Curlin colt became the first horse to record multiple triple-digit BRIS Speed ratings in the 2017-18 Road to the Kentucky Derby series.

McKinzie was making only his second start after a convincing maiden tally and the Street Sense colt remains a promising prospect for his Hall of Fame conditioner.

Instilled Regard, a son of Arch who cost $1.05 million at the OBS March 2-year-old sale, stretched out to two turns to break his maiden convincingly in his previous outing and looks like a colt with plenty of upside for Jerry Hollendorfer.
