The Kentucky Derby has been an annual tradition since 1875, when a curious crowd of 10,000 spectators first assembled at Churchill Downs to cheer on a field of 15 Thoroughbred horses. Much has changed in the world of racing - as well as the world at large - since then, but the "Run for the Roses" has continued unabated, powering through a pair of World Wars and, most recently, a pandemic, without skipping a beat.

0: Number of times the Kentucky Derby has been cancelled because of inclement weather.

1.25: Distance, in miles, of the Kentucky Derby. The race was reduced from 1.5 miles in 1896.

2: Amount, in millions, of the Kentucky Derby winning purse.

3: Number of horses that participated in the 18th running of the Kentucky Derby. It remains the smallest field in Derby history.

3.5: The weight, in pounds, of the 14-karat gold trophy awarded to the owner of the Kentucky Derby winner. The trophy has been given annually since 1925.

6: Number of women who have ridden in the Kentucky Derby. The exclusive list includes Diane Crump, Patti Cooksey, Andrea Seefeldt, Julie Krone, Rosemary Homeister, and Rosie Napravnik.

8: Number of Kentucky Derby wins by Calumet Farm, the most by an owner.

15: The age, in years, of Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton, when he became the youngest jockey to win the Kentucky Derby in 1892.
