Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: In Due Time

In Due Time came along in time for the Road to the Kentucky Derby, placing second in the Fountain of Youth S. (G2) and third in the Lexington S. (G3) to earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby (G1) starting gate.
There’s a lot to like about In Due Time from a pedigree perspective. The chestnut colt is a son of Not This Time, a flashy juvenile who won the Iroquois S. (G3) before placing a close second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Not This Time has risen quickly to prominence at stud and could be represented by as many as three starters in the 2022 Kentucky Derby, namely Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Epicenter, Fountain of Youth S. (G2) winner Simplification, and In Due Time.
Not This Time is a son of Giant’s Causeway, a source of stamina whose progeny have historically faltered in the Kentucky Derby. But Not This Time was produced by the Trippi mare Miss Macy Sue, previously the dam of brilliant Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) hero Liam’s Map, so it’s possible Not This Time will pass on more of the miler speed important for Kentucky Derby success than Giant’s Causeway.
Getting back to In Due Time, he is the first foal produced by the unraced Curlin mare Sweet Sweet Annie. Curlin is too young to have compiled a significant record as a broodmare sire, but his own progeny have proven remarkably competitive in the Triple Crown series while generally thriving over classic distances on dirt.
Case in point? Curlin is the sire of Preakness S. (G1) winner Exaggerator, Belmont S. (G1) winner Palace Malice, Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic, Preakness runner-up Ride On Curlin, Belmont runner-up Irish War Cry, Belmont third-place finisher Keen Ice, and Preakness third-place finisher Tenfold. He’s also the sire of champions Vino Rosso, Stellar Wind, and Malathaat, all victorious in multiple Grade 1 races running long on dirt.
Even if you’ve historically been skeptical of the Giant’s Causeway male line as a source of potential Kentucky Derby winners, In Due Time is worth your attention. Not This Time has the potential to pass on more speed, and Curlin is a tried-and-true source of classic bloodlines, so this combination is eligible to produce a strong showing on the first Saturday in May.
