Kentucky Derby Roundup: Feb. 24, 2020

February 24th, 2020

Stay up to speed on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with a weekly roundup of all the latest news and developments:

Changes on the Leaderboard

The action shifted to Japan last week with the running of the Hyacinth S., the penultimate leg of the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. The 1,600-meter race offered qualification points to the top four finishers on a 30-12-6-3 basis, and Triple Crown nominees showed their appreciation by sweeping the superfecta.

The victorious Cafe Pharoah was particularly impressive. A gate-to-wire debut winner going 1,800 meters at Nakayama, Cafe Pharoah broke poorly in the Hyacinth and briefly lost contact with the field, but overcame off this slow start to rally wide and win by 1 1/4 lengths. The son of American Pharoah sprinted the final 600 meters in a snappy :35.20 and recorded a final time of 1:37.70, the fastest running of the Hyacinth since multiple Group 1 winner Gold Dream clocked 1:35.40 in 2016.

Cafe Pharoah now sits atop the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby, with Hyacinth runner-up Tagano Beauty moving into third place. Yaugau and Longonot, who rounded out the top four in the Hyacinth, rank fifth and sixth on the leaderboard.
