Barnes firms into 6-1 individual favoritism in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3
Unbeaten San Vicente (G2) winner Barnes consolidated his position as the individual favorite in the 2025 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW), closing as the 6-1 choice among the named interests in Pool 3. Moreover, Barnes was flirting for a time with overall favoritism before late money came in Sunday evening to push the mutuel field of “All Others” into market leadership at 4-1.
The Bob Baffert trainee also ranked as the individual favorite at 13-1 in Pool 2 that ran from Nov. 28-Dec. 1. At that stage, Barnes had just a debut maiden win at Churchill Downs to his credit. By delivering a tour de force performance next out in the Jan. 4 San Vicente, the $3.2 million son of Into Mischief gave bettors more to savor.
Another Into Mischief colt, Patch Adams, was bet down to 12-1 as the second favorite among the individual interests in Pool 3. A 10-length maiden winner in near track-record time at Churchill Nov. 30, the Brad Cox runner will pursue Derby points in Saturday’s Southwest (G3) at Oaklawn Park.
Next in the wagering were two from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), beaten favorite East Avenue finishing at his 15-1 morning line and front-running winner Citizen Bull at 17-1.
East Avenue, a Godolphin homebred trained by Brendan Walsh, aims to rebound from his troubled ninth in the Juvenile. The Medaglia d’Oro colt is gearing up at Fair Grounds for the Feb. 15 Risen Star (G2).
Citizen Bull, now in the shadow of stablemate Barnes, plans to return in the Feb. 1 Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita. Likewise an Into Mischief from the Baffert barn, Citizen Bull is expected to receive the Eclipse Award as champion two-year-old male during Thursday night’s gala.
The Michael McCarthy-trained Journalism, a convincing winner of the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), held steady with his 20-1 morning line. Sovereignty, last seen landing the Street Sense (G3) for Bill Mott, was trimmed to 21-1.
Cox’s Disco Time was a major market mover after taking Saturday’s Lecomte (G3) at Fair Grounds, plunging from a 50-1 morning line to 21-1. Built, just nailed in the Lecomte, closed at 33-1.
Complete Pool 3 results, including will-pays and exactas, will be available on the special Future Wager page at KentuckyDerby.com.
Three more KDFW opportunities remain before the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3. Pool 4 of the KDFW will run from Feb. 14-16, while Pool 5 will be conducted alongside the one Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (KOFW) March 14-16. The final Pool 6 is set to open April 3 but close before the final round of domestic preps on April 5.
