Barnes remains 8-1 individual favorite in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 4

February 17th, 2025

Unbeaten San Vicente (G2) winner Barnes closed as the 8-1 individual favorite in Pool 4 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW), while the mutuel field of “All Other Three-Year-Olds” continued to rank as the overall betting choice at 9-2. Both ended holding to their morning lines for Pool 4, which ran from Friday to Sunday evening.

Initially taking over individual favoritism as a 13-1 chance in Pool 2, Barnes was a 6-1 proposition in Pool 3.

Barnes fended off a Pool 4 challenge from his Bob Baffert stablemate, Citizen Bull, who finished at 9-1. Last year’s champion two-year-old male, Citizen Bull returned triumphant in the Feb. 1 Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita

Burnham Square, an individual interest new to Pool 4, was trimmed from a 20-1 morning line to 15-1. The Ian Wilkes trainee raised his profile with a convincing stakes debut in the Feb. 1 Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park.

The Mark Casse-trained Sandman steamed from 40-1 to 16-1 by the close of trade. The son of Tapit likewise boosted his claims with a hard-charging second in the Jan. 25 Southwest (G3) at Oaklawn Park, despite a terrible start. Bettors locked in ahead of his next try in Saturday’s Rebel (G2).

Godolphin’s Sovereignty, last seen beating Sandman in the Oct. 27 Street Sense (G3) at Churchill Downs, was nibbled into 17-1. The Bill Mott colt, initially pegged at 20-1 on the morning line, is penciled in for the March 1 Fountain of Youth (G2).

The only Road to the Kentucky Derby scoring race staged during Pool 4, Saturday’s Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds, reinforced the appeal of “All Others.” The resounding 9 3/4-length winner in stakes-record time, Magnitude, was not named as an individual option.

Those who were individual interests didn’t advertise their claims in the Risen Star. East Avenue, who opened at 15-1, was a market mover before he flopped as the favorite. His dead-heat 10th saw his odds drift to 18-1. Built, the distant third in the Risen Star, climbed from 30-1 to 43-1. Fourth Vassimo saw his price almost double from 50-1 to 96-1. Jonathan’s Way, a 50-1 chance on the morning line, ended at 61-1 after scratching from the Risen Star.

The Sunland Park Derby went off at 6:23 p.m. ET Sunday, after Pool 4 closed. The lone individual interest in action, Baffert’s Getaway Car, was all out to prevail on the head-bob. His Pool 4 odds had tumbled from 80-1 to 50-1.

Two more KDFW opportunities are available in the build-up to the 151st Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 3. Pool 5 will be conducted March 14-16, in concert with the one and only Kentucky Oaks Future Wager. Pool 6, set for April 3-5, will end before the final major domestic preps.
