Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Journalism, pegged as the 3-1 favorite on the morning line, drew well in post 8. Just to his inside are the Japanese duo of Luxor Cafe (post 7) and Admire Daytona (post 6), while most of the speed factors are further inside.

Two of the confirmed closers, Sovereignty (5-1) and Sandman (6-1), are listed as the second and third choices, respectively. They will break next to each other near the outside, with Sandman aiming to be the first horse to win the Derby from post 17, and Sovereignty landing in post 18 in the 20-horse field.

The lone also-eligible, Baeza, needs a defection by 9 a.m. ET Friday to get into the starting gate.
