The History of the Vertem Futurity Trophy

The race was founded in 1961 by Timeform founder Phil Bull, who said British juveniles needed a major race over a mile. It began as the Timeform Gold Cup, and after periods of sponsorship from The Observer and William Hill bookmakers, it has been sponsored by the Racing Post since 1979.

Since its inauguration, 13 winners of the race have gone on to win European Classics. Those Classic winners are High Top, Camelot, Green Dancer, American Post, Reference Point, High Chaparral, Motivator, Authorized, Noblesse, Ribocco, Celtic Swing, Brian Boru, and Kingston Hill. It was also won in 1967 by the outstanding Vaguely Noble.

The race is also one of seven that formed part of the inaugural European Road to the Kentucky Derby in 2017. The first four horses across the line earn qualifying points on a 10-4-2-1 basis. One Kentucky Derby horse of note ran in the race: Bold Arrangement, second across the line in the 1985 Racing Post Trophy to Bakharoff but later disqualified, went on to be runner-up in the 1986 Kentucky Derby to Ferdinand.
