Changes on the Kentucky Oaks Leaderboard

While there weren’t any Road to the Kentucky Oaks prep races held last weekend, the leaderboard still experienced a potential shift when Bloodhorse.com reported British Idiom has been sidelined due to an ankle chip. The injury was discovered after British Idiom finish a dull 10th in the Fantasy (G3) on May 1, a sharp regression from the fine form she displayed as a 2-year-old, culminating with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

British Idiom currently sits eighth on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard with 50 points to her credit, but her injury will require 60 days of rest, putting her participation in the Sept. 4 Kentucky Oaks in question. Should British Idiom wind up skipping the Run for the Lilies, the door will open for a lower-ranked filly to qualify. The bubble horse at the moment is Spice Is Nice (20 points), runner-up in the Davona Dale (G2) but most recently fifth in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2).

Alta’s Award: Honeybee (G3) runner-up cruised an easy half-mile in :52 on Sunday at Oaklawn Park.

Bonny South: Rapidly-improving Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) champion clocked a half-mile in :49.20 on Saturday at Keeneland.

Lucrezia: On Saturday, the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) runner-up clocked 5 furlongs in 1:01.20 over the all-weather track at Fair Hill.

Perfect Alibi: The 2019 Spinaway (G1) winner breezed an easy half-mile in :51.13 over the Belmont Park training track on Friday.

Sharing: The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) champion turned in her longest workout of the year on Saturday at Fair Hill, breezing 7-furlongs over the all-weather track in 1:28.40.

Tonalist’s Shape: In preparation for a start in Friday’s Hollywood Wildcat S., the Davona Dale (G2) winner clocked a half-mile in :48.12 on Sunday at Gulfstream.

Water White: On Wednesday, the Busher Invitational winner cruised an easy 5 furlongs in 1:02.23 over the Belmont Park training track.

Looking Ahead on the Kentucky Oaks

As tracks slowly reopen, new paths to the Kentucky Oaks will slowly come into focus. The Santa Anita Oaks (G2), tentatively scheduled for June 6, is the next prep race on the agenda. But additional races will likely be added to the slate, with the July 4 Delaware Oaks (G3) at Delaware Park and the July 11 Indiana Oaks (G3) at Indiana Grand looming as logical options. Both Delaware Park and Indiana Grand are scheduled to reopen in June, allowing for minimal disruption to their stakes schedules.
