Limousine Liberal Seeks Another Stakes Victory
Popular sprinter Limousine Liberal seeks his fourth stakes win of the year when he contests the Stoll Keenan Ogden Phoenix Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Oct. 6.
The son of Successful Appeal is a deserved 5-2 morning-line favorite in the Phoenix Stakes, a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race for which the winner will earn direct entry to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1).
Limousine Liberal finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint last year. In 2017 he’s taken out three graded races at Churchill Downs: the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2), the Aristides Stakes (G3), and the Kelly’s Landing Overnight Stakes. He was also a game second behind El Deal in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) at Saratoga.
Just ahead of him in the Vanderbilt was Awesome Banner. He’s rated an 8-1 chance after finishing fourth in the Frank J. Francis Memorial Stakes (G3) at Parx Racing. Third that day was Whitmore, who seeks to regain the form in the Phoenix Stakes that he showed when winning five consecutive races earlier this year, including the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) and the Maryland Sprint Stakes (G3). He’s rated a 3-1 morning-line chance.
Favorite Tale is rated a 6-1 chance, and would probably be at shorter odds if he was showing the form which took him to a third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on this course in 2015. However, he’s only run three times since then, the most recent a second-place finish in the Banjo Picker Sprint Stakes at Parx Racing Sept. 2.
Threefiveindia is another rated a 6-1 chance. He recorded graded stakes placings in the Gallant Bob Handicap (G3) and Bold Ruler Handicap (G2) last year, and won a Saratoga allowance at his most recent start.
One of the most intriguing runners is Uncontested. He was aimed at Road to the Kentucky Derby races at the beginning of this year, but lost form as the distances increased. He returned to finish third in the Pat Day Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, and at his last start won a six-furlong allowance back at Churchill Downs.
There should be some good speed on in the race, but it’s hard to ignore Limousine Liberal, who has been extremely consistent this year. It’s also worth considering Awesome Banner, Whitmore, and Favorite Tale for multiples.
