Louisiana Downs: Analyzing Pick 4, Pick 5, and Super High 5 carryovers

June 17th, 2023

It isn’t every day that a racetrack starts the day with a trio of non-jackpot carryovers up for grabs. But Saturday’s card at Louisiana Downs is a noteworthy exception.

Longshots won left and right at Louisiana Downs last Tuesday, the most recent day of racing. As a result, no one hit the 50-cent Pick 4, the 50-cent Pick 5, or the 50-cent Super High 5, resulting in carryovers for all three wagers.

If you’re planning to chase the carryovers on Saturday, here are the details of each prize pool:

  • $3,194 Pick 5 carryover begins in Race 4 (4:29 p.m. ET)
  • $7,353 Pick 4 carryover begins in Race 5 (4:57 p.m. ET)
  • $1,056 Super High 5 carryover up for grabs in Race 8 (6:21 p.m. ET)

Hands-down the most important race to decipher is Race 8, since it’s involved in all three carryovers. It’s a $7,500 claimer taking place over 7 1/2 furlongs on turf, and with 11 entries, there are plenty of possible outcomes.

For Pick 4 and Pick 5 purposes, we recommend using #4 Doc Irwin (9-2), #5 Indy Tourist (7-2), and #11 Freightrainfreeman (4-1). Doc Irwin hasn’t been in the strongest form as of late, but he’s been facing tougher competition, and three starts back he ran second in a $15,000 claimer racing one mile over the Sam Houston turf course. Indy Tourist exits second- and third-place finishes in turf allowances at Sam Houston, while Freightrainfreeman recently won a $12,500 claimer over this course and distance.

All three are worth emphasizing in the Super High 5 as well, with a preference for Indy Tourist and Freightrainfreeman on top of tickets.

But if you’re looking for a single to build Pick 4 and Pick 5 tickets around, you might check out #1 She Told You So (7-2) in Race 5, a $12,500 claimer for fillies and mares who have never won two races. The distance is 7 1/2 furlongs on turf, but only four of the 12 entrants have ever won a grass race.

She Told You So is one of the proven turf winners. Her lone start on grass saw her rally sharply to dominate a 7 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Louisiana Downs by 2 1/4 lengths, earning a 68 Brisnet Speed rating.

She Told You So has since competed in three dirt races at Fair Grounds, including a stakes. Switching back to turf and tackling a claimer for the first time can send She Told You So to the winner’s circle for the hot jockey/trainer duo of Alexander Castillo and Joseph Foster, who have gone 2-for-9 (22%) teaming up together over the last two months.

Good luck!
