Louisiana Downs: Horses to play in three carryovers

September 4th, 2022

Just how many non-jackpot carryovers are up for grabs on Sunday at Louisiana Downs? Not one… not two… but three.

Saturday afternoon brought a series of upsets to Louisiana Downs, triggering a $1,134 Pick 4 carryover, a $240 Pick 5 carryover, and a $451 Super High 5 carryover.

The Pick 5 gets started in Race 3 (post time 5:01 p.m. ET), a $10,000 starter optional claimer taking place over 7 1/2 furlongs on turf. A large field has turned out, but #10 Tigerbeach (3-2) has the appearance of a trustworthy single.

Tigerbeach has been absolutely on fire over the Louisiana Downs turf course this year. He’s rattled off three straight victories by daylight margins, including a pair of $10,000 starter optional claimers. In a one-mile heat on July 17, Tigerbeach employed pace-tracking tactics (a departure from his usual pacesetting style) to dominate by 6 1/4 lengths. A typical performance from Tigerbeach should land him a fourth consecutive victory.

The Pick 4, the Pick 5, and the Super High 5 all cross paths in Race 7 (post time 6:49 p.m. ET), the final race of the afternoon. The event in question is a $12,500 maiden claimer taking place over one mile on turf, and two horses appear to rank above the rest: #4 Unified Assets (3-2) and #11 Plutonium (5-1).

Unified Assets might be a suitable choice to single in the multi-race wagers and key on top in the Super High 5. He’s finished fourth in his last two starts against maiden special weight company over this course and distance and should appreciate dropping in class for hot trainer Sarah Delany, a 28% winner this meet and a 43% winner teaming up with jockey Alexander Castillo over the last two months.

Plutonium’s form isn’t quite as flashy at first glance, but he hasn’t run on turf since last September, when he finished third in a one-mile maiden special weight at Louisiana Downs. He’s actually cracked the trifecta a couple of times against maiden special weight company over this course and might outrun expectations while returning to the surface.

A viable Super High 5 ticket could look like this:

  • 50-cent Super High 5: 4 with 11 with 3,5,7,9 with 3,5,7,9 with ALL ($48)

Good luck!
