Mahoning: Betting the $105,393 Pick 6 mandatory payout
Saturday is closing day of the Mahoning Valley race meet, which means the $105,393 jackpot carryover in the 20-cent Pick 6 is slated for a mandatory payout.
It’s a great opportunity for bettors to chase a valuable carryover, so let’s analyze the six-race sequence and assemble a play for $72:
Race 3: $4,000 Starter Allowance (six furlongs)
It’s tough to split the contenders in this competitive starter allowance. We’ll spread deep with #2 T Money (5-1), #4 Uptown Guy (15-1), #5 Kosciuszko (7-2), #6 Lauda Speed (3-1), and #7 Oro de Moro Moro (2-1).
Race 4: Allowance (one mile)
#6 Princessofthenorth (7-5) exits a third-place finish in a $30,000 claimer on Tapeta at Turfway Park, but she didn’t run especially well in her lone dirt start more than two years ago. She’s a logical contender for the red-hot jockey/trainer duo of Luis Rivera and Anthony Farrior, but we’ll back her up with #2 Makes Sense to Me (8-1) and #5 Lost Bikini (2-1).
What are mandatory-payout carryovers, and why are they valuable?

Race 5: Allowance (six furlongs)
#1 Lady Lottie (2-1) rarely misses the exacta and is taking on Ohio-bred rivals after cracking the top two in five straight Mahoning Valley allowance sprints against non-state-restricted company. She shouldn’t be underestimated, though stakes winner #2 Wine Me Up Baby (5-2) is a formidable challenger, and stretch-running route racer #6 She’s Crafty (8-1) could be dangerous while cutting back in distance for this speed-packed sprint.
Race 6: Southern Park S. (six furlongs)
#1 Nublada (5-2) is 2-for-2, winning maiden and allowance contests sprinting six furlongs at Mahoning. But she was best by less than a length over #8 Kiss Me Quick (3-1) in her allowance score, and #2 Officially Yours (7-2) has posted comparable Brisnet Speed ratings. Even #5 Gold Honey (8-1) is fast enough to factor on her best day.
Race 7: Howard B. Noonan S. (six furlongs)
#1 Shadowy (2-1) has dominated his last three sprints starts by daylight margins, including the six-furlong Joshua Radosevich Memorial S. at Mahoning. He’s coupled in the betting with #1A Hottie Spottie (2-1), #1B Golden Flag (2-1), and #1X Spellcast (2-1), which adds to the appeal, but since Shadowy hasn’t run since December we’ll also use #4 Gunner Gabriel (9-2), whose 2-for-2 record this year includes a win in the six-furlong OTBO Sales Graduate Race S. at Mahoning.
Race 8: Maiden Special Weight (six furlongs)
The speedy filly #8 Getaway Bay (6-5) earned a strong 83 Brisnet Speed rating when finishing second in her debut over this track and distance on March 7. She’s taking on males in her second start, but none of her rivals have earned a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 70 on dirt, so Getaway Bay should be tough to beat. We’ll single her to conclude the Pick 6.
- 20-cent Pick 6: 2,4,5,6,7 with 2,5,6 with 1,2,6 with 1,2,5,8 with 1,4 with 8 ($72)
Good luck!
