A Brief History of the Dubai World Cup

The Dubai World Cup is the richest horse race in the world, and the ninth richest sporting event overall.  It is held on the last Saturday in March each year at the stunning Meydan racetrack in Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates.

The race was created by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum - more commonly known in horse racing as Sheikh Mohammed and the owner of Godolphin racing.

The first race in 1996 was won by the American superstar Cigar, owned by Allen Paulson, trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Jerry Bailey.  Sheikh Mohammed has won the race which he created seven times, once as a sole owner (Singspiel in 1997) and six times under the ownership name of Godolphin.

The 2014 renewal of the race, won by African Story, was broadcast live in the USA on Fox Sports 1 and sponsored by BetAmerica.com - a relationship which will be repeated for the 2015 Dubai World Cup, when California Chrome will be the main American hope in the race.
