Maryland Juvenile S. field analysis and exotics plays

Seven two-year-olds will sprint seven furlongs at Laurel Park on Saturday in the $100,000 Maryland Juvenile S., headlined by undefeated Frosted colt Post Time.

#1 POST TIME (1-1): Unbeaten in two career tries, Post Time drew the rail post, which is winning at a 20% clip, in his third outing at Laurel Park. The Tapit grandson won on debut by two lengths in a $59K maiden special weight on Oct. 7, then romped to a 6 3/4-length win at today’s distance in an allowance optional claimer Oct. 27. Trainer Brittany Russell is a 23% winner in non-graded stakes and a 26% winner with two-year-olds. Eric Camacho retains the mount.

#2 TIDEWATER (30-1): Third in both career starts, Tidewater will move up in class and try dirt for the first time for conditioner Anthony Aguirre Jr., who’s just 1-for-24 this meet. The Danzig grandson stretched out to 1 1/18 miles on the Laurel Park grass last out and may relish the cutback in distance, but his career-best 78 Brisnet Speed figure pales in comparison to that of many of today's race rivals.

#3 TIZ NO CLOWN (20-1): The two-year-old pacesetter faced stakes company in his last two, finishing fifth by 10 lengths in the James F. Lewis III S. and sixth by 12 lengths in the Maryland Million Nursery S., which was won by today’s race rival, Johnyz From Albany. The dark bay is eligible to improve in his third start off a layoff and has one win in four starts at Laurel Park.

#4 JOHNYZ FROM ALBANY (8-5): A five-length winner in the Maryland Million Nursery, the Quality Road grandson now has two wins and a second in his three career starts at this track. Trainer Dale Capuano is a 20% winner with horses that won their last race and has gone 71-14-19-11 this meet, while Johnyz From Albany’s 93 Brisnet Speed rating in the six-furlong stakes is the second-highest last race speed rating, behind Post Time’s 95.

#5 CALIFORNIA GHOST (30-1): The California Chrome son has yet to break his maiden and was a distant third in his last two starts, a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight and a one-mile maiden claimer. Trainer Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon is a 20% winner second off the layoff but just a 9% winner in his last 66 non-graded stakes.

#6 COFFEEWITHCHRIS (8-1): A Curlin grandson, the two-year-old gelding posted a 90 BRIS figure when finishing fourth in the James F. Lewis III last out and will now stretch out to seven furlongs for the first time. He’s hit the board in his last three and will get a rider switch with Jevian Toledo, a 19% winner in sprints. Trainer John Salzman is a 16% winner in non-graded stakes and an 18% winner with sprint distances. Coffeewithchris also posted a sharp four-furlong workout on Nov. 23, suggesting he's sharp and ready.

#7 FEELING WOOZY (6-1): After finishing second at the maiden special weight level on Oct. 7 and Oct. 28, Feeling Woozy broke his maiden at today’s distance while flashing an 86 BRIS figure in a four-length victory. The Irish War Cry gelding posted E1 and E2 figures of 92 and 93 and will look to set the pace from out the gate while breaking from the outside. Angel Cruz will stay in the saddle and has won at a 21% rate with pacesetter types over the last two months.

Maryland Juvenile Filly S. and Juvenile S. double wager

#4 Chickieness opened as the 5-2 morning line favorite in the Juvenile Filly, but weakened to finish third in a six-furlong allowance optional claimer last out on Nov. 14. Two back, she won the six-furlong Maryland Million Lassie S., besting #9 Skylar's Sister and #5 Bosserati, who re-oppose here.

We'll try to beat the favorite with debut maiden winner #1 Malibu Moonshine (7-2), who drew the rail post, and flashed an 82 Brisnet Speed figure when romping to a six-length win at Pimlico on Sept. 11. We'll also include longshot #7 Fast Tracked (10-1) from the barn of Arnaud Delacour, a 36% winner this meet. The well-bred two-year-old won at today's distance on debut and switches to hot jockey Jorge Ruiz. #3 Gormley's Gabriela (8-1) is another intriguing longer shot who may benefit from a rider change to Jeiron Barbosa, an 18% winner in sprints. The Malibu Moon filly has posted back-to-back BRIS figures in the low 80s and has two wins and two thirds from four races at Laurel.
