May 1 spot plays at Churchill Downs

A spectacular 14-race card led by the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) highlights the Saturday action at Churchill Downs. The seven graded stakes races that will be contested will take the spotlight, but there are seven other events with plenty of appeal on the slate, too. I will try to build my bankroll early on.

Race 1 -- Allowance

There is nothing like getting the wagering day started off at 10:30 a.m. (ET) in my opinion. One-mile dirt endeavor for the boys attracted 10, with nine betting entries, to get the bonanza day started. The field lacks class overall and it appears to be a fine spot for the return of stakes winner #5 Soros (6-1). Now in the hands of the very capable McCarthy, the gelded son of Commissioner flashed good potential at two, and following an abbreviated sophomore season, the four-year-old looks set to roll in his seasonal debut. Castellano riding adds to his appeal.

Race 2 -- Maiden Special Weight

The pair of favorites seems logical, although #12 The Ginger Queen (9-2) might get first run on both turning for home for Motion. Second-time starter flashed potential over a good course with a wide trip at Keeneland on debut, and a forward move is expected in this assignment. Teofilo filly retains Castellano who could pick up the early double on Saturday.

Race 3 -- Maiden Special Weight

It’s probably hard to call a $2.15 million yearling purchase a "value" play, but #9 Alexander Valley (10-1) is just that for Bill Mott. Well-bred son of Medaglia d’Oro has been knocking at the door in some recent turf outings against nice foes, and I believe that the return to the dirt will do the trick for the colt. John Velazquez riding is a plus as he and Mott are often a dangerous combination.

Race 13 -- Allowance

Whether you need a get-out horse, or you are trying to expand on your profits following the Derby, this race offers a lot of appeal. Much of the attention will go to #6 Triple Tap (4-1), a half-brother to living legend American Pharoah, but I think that #3 Tulane Tryst (6-1) will be the one for DeVaux. Recent maiden victor came home fast in his graduating run at Fair Grounds in a deep field, and the son of Into Mischief has posted four solid morning works in the interim. Gabe Saez retains the mount.
