Meadowlands Saturday night card proved noteworthy
During the opening weekend of the National Football League playoffs and amid the brief hiatus at nearby Yonkers Raceway across the Hudson River, the Meadowlands offered a solid Saturday night card in which driver Andy Miller and a trio of Winbak Farm products took center stage over the off going.
In the second race on the card, Miller guided Winbak product Surfing Tide to a length score as the even-money choice in a non-winners of three races or $40,000 lifetime class for younger pacers. A four-year-old Roll With Joe gelding trained by Nik Drennan, Surfing Tide benefited from a second over trip and eventually wore down 8-5 second choice Declan Seelster (Jim Marohn, Jr.) for a length triumph in 1:52.1. It was the second straight score for the Maryland-bred and his sixth in 15 career tries and sent his lifetime earnings past $45,000.
One race later on the card Miller guided home yet another favorite bred by Winbak when Joe's Bid brushed to command before the half in 56.4, led the way by three-quarters in 1:24 and drew clear to a four-length score in 1:51.4 as the 3-2 choice in a non-winners of $3,500 last five starts class. A five-year-old Roll With Joe gelding trained by Richard Johnson, Joe's Bid kicked off his 2019 campaign with an easy tally and now owns a 4-8-8 slate and $87,000 banked from 43 lifetime outings.
Two races later in a non-winners of $8,600 last five starts class for older pacers, McClinchie (Yannick Gingras) rallied second over to prevail as the 8-5 favorite in 1:52.4. A seven-year-old Bettor's Delight gelding owned and trained by Shaun Vallee, McClinchie began his 2019 campaign with a determined triumph and now owns a respectable 13-15-12 slate and nearly $120,000 banked from 79 career outings. He also lowered his lifetime mark by two ful seconds in the process.
Then one race later in a non-winners of $11,500 last five starts class for older pacers, Winning Linc (Miller) rallied for a determined nose victory over Bushwacker (Dexter Dunn) in 1:51.4 as part of the 9-5 favored entry for trained Richard Johnson. A six-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding trained by Johnson, Winning Linc opened his current campaign with a gritty score and now owns a 13-9-15 slate and nearly $230,000 banked from 69 career tries and just missed matching his lifetime mark from three years earlier.
One race later in a non-winners of $15,500 last five starts class for older pacers, Tuxedo Bay (Eric Carlson) brushed to command past a 27.1 opener, carved out honest fractions of 54.2 and 1:23 through the next two calls and held sway late to score by nearly two lengths as the tepid 2-1 choice in 1:51.2. A five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding owned and trained by Mark Silva and bred by Winbak, Tuxedo Bay opened the 2019 campaign with a handy score and now owns an 11-11-8 slate and over $140,000 banked from 58 career tries.
Then one race later in the featured $21,000 Preferred Handicap for pacers, K Ryan Bluechip (Miller) rallied from well off the pace and third over to prevail in 1:50.4 as an overlooked 6-1 shot. The seven-year-old Art Major gelding trained by Virgil Morgan, Jr. opened his 2019 slate with a victory and has now won three of his last four outings over the Big M oval. K Ryan Bluechip also boasts 31 wins and over $390,000 banked from 99 lifetime tries and should make his 100th career start this weekend at the Big M.
One race later on the card, Awesomeness (Miller) gained command in a 27.2 opener, maintained command by the half in 55.1 and by three-quarters in 1:23.4 and held safe late to capture a non-winners of $8,600 last five starts class in 1:51.2 as an overlooked 8-1 shot. A six-year-old Mach Three gelding owned and trained by Mark Ford, Awesomeness now owns 19 wins and nearly $310,000 banked from 64 career outings and gave Miller his sixth winner on the card.
