Miami Valley, Rosecroft and Pompano Park offer Sunday cards

As college basketball fans continued to watch the NCAA tournament field get narrowed down to 16 on Sunday evening, serious harness racing fans were following the action at Miami Valley in Ohio, Rosecroft Raceway in Maryland and Pompano Park in Florida.

Toward the end of the card at Miami Valley on Sunday, All About Cowboys (Jason Brewer) rallied second over down the backside then first over on the far turn and through the lane to edge favored Andy Ray (Elliott Deaton) for a nose score in 1:54 in the $25,000 Open I Handicap for trotters. A six-year-old Swan For All gelding trained by Ken Rucker, All About Cowboys notched his second straight win in the weekly feature for trotters and now owns four wins from eight starts this year and sports a 17-22-16 slate and $220,000 banked from 92 career tries.

In one of the early races on the Sunday card at Rosecroft, Woodyintheshade (Jared Moyer) easily lived up to his role as the 1-2 favorite in the non-winners of three races lifetime class for younger horses when he gained command in a 28.1 opener, got a breather to the half in 58.3, raced unpressed down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:27 then held sway late to a three-length score in 1:56. The four-year-old Shadyshark Hanover gelding trained by Arlene Cameron for owner John Wagner notched his second win in six starts this year and owns a 2-6-3 slate and $18,000 banked from 34 career tries.

Then one race later in a non-winners of $3,001 last four starts class for trotters, Whitesville Dixon (David Hill, III) benefited from a pocket journey and patient handling through the first three calls then overhauled favored Don Dorado (Tony Morgan) in the lane for a two-length score in 1:56.4. A seven-year-old Doggone Yankee gelding owned, bred and trained by Gary White, Whitesville Dixon recorded his first win in four starts this year and now sports a 15-19-20 slate and nearly $135,000 banked from exactly 100 career outings.

One race later in a non-winners of six races lifetime class for younger pacers, Bo Breeze (Morgan) brushed to command before the half in 56.3, rebuffed bids from Redwood Again (Frank Milby) and 4-5 choice Yeahboyyeah (Chuck Perry, Jr.) to score by two lengths in 1:53.2. A four-year-old Nuclear Breeze gelding trained by Shawn Murray, Bo Breeze notched his second win in seven starts this year and now owns a 6-7-6 slate and $61,000 banked from 47 lifetime outings.

Then one race later in a non-winners of $4,100 last four starts class for pacers, Sam McSmith (Sean Bier) lived up to his role as the 6-5 favorite when he overcame an extended first over journey to wear down White Rolls (Richard Still) then outlasted the late bid of Bluebird Ideal (Morgan) to score by a length in 1:52.1. A six-year-old McArdle gelding trained by Sean Bier, Sam McSmith (Bier) notched his second win from 11 starts this year and now boasts 12 wins and nearly $182,000 banked from 67 career tries.

One race later in the featured $10,000 Open Handicap for older pacers, Rock N Roll Jet (Kim Vincent) lived up to his role as the 6-5 favorite when he overcame dull cover second over and swept widest of all in the lane and finally wore down Hickory Aloha (Timmy Offutt) in the final strides for score by a nose in 1:52.2. A 10-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding owned and trained by William "Buddy" Bright" Rock N Roll Jet recorded his second straight score and now owns a 49-32-27 slate and nearly $400,000 banked from 257 career outings.

Then two races later in the non-winners of $6,001 last four starts class for older pacers, JW Renegade (John Mackinnon) rallied third over past the half, widest of all down the backside while following Lil Johnny (Milby) into the far turn, fanned widest of all in the lane and overhauled the favorite for a length score in 1:52.4. A six-year-old Pacific Renegade gelding trained, driven and leased by Mackinnon, JW Renegade recorded his second straight victory and now owns a 20-17-11 slate and $160,000 bankroll from 112 lifetime tries.

Then two races later in a non-winners of $4,000 last four starts for older pacers, Yankee Artillery (Bier) left alertly then raced parked to gain command before the half in 55.3, raced unpressed down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:24.1 then held sway late in 1:54. A six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained and driven by Bier, Yankee Artillery now owns two wins and $6,300 banked from six starts this year and now owns a 15-14-11 slate and nearly $228,000 banked from 88 career tries.

That same evening at Pompano Park, Mc Mach (Rick Plano) overcame an extended first over journey down the backside and through the far turn and wore down favored Harry Terror (Wally Hennessey) in the lane for a neck victory in 1:51.4. A five-year-old Mach Three gelding trained and driven by Plano, Mc Mach notched his second win from 10 starts this year and now sports 12 wins and nearly $140,000 banked from 61 career outings.

Then just past the midway point of the card in the $10,000 Open Handicap, American Hustle (Bryce Fenn) rallied from well off the pace, third over and widest of all to overhaul 6-5 choice Brigadierbronski A (Mike Simons), Rebellious (Jim Meittinis) and Sgt Pappa Daddy (John Macdonald) for a nose score and 14-1 upset in 1:52.1. A five-year-old American Ideal stallion owned and trained by Bryan Lawrence, American Hustle notched his fifth win from nine starts this year and now sports 19 wins and over $140,000 banked from 50 career tries.

One race later in a non-winners of $3,750 last four starts/optional $12,500 claiming event, Beach Pro (Aaron Byron) continued the trend of upsetters when he left to secure good early position, yielded to Brookletsjustified (Hennessy) briefly then immediately retook, rolled by the half in 56.4, met token pressure by three-quarters in 1:24.2 then held safe the late bid of 3-5 favorite Doo Wop Hanover (David Ingraham) for a neck triumph in 1:52.3. The five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained by Jeffrey Byron recorded his first win in seven starts this year despite being an injury scratch the week before and held safe Doo Wop Hanover who had been idle five weeks.

That same evening at Pocono Downs, Awesomeness (George Napolitano, Jr.) just lived up to his billing as the 2-5 favorite in a non-winners of $3,100 last five starts class for pacers when he quarter moved to command, maintained an honest tempo by the half in 55.2, faced serious pressure from Forevernal Ways (Andrew McCarthy) by three-quarters in 1:23.2, through the turn and through the lane and just lasted for a neck score in 1:52.2. The six-year-old Mach Three gelding owned and trained by Mark Ford recorded his second win from seven starts this year and now owns 20 wins and nearly $320,000 banked from 72 lifetime outings.

Then one race later in the featured non-winners of $24,500 last five starts class for trotters, Melady's Monet (McCarthy) overcame an extended first over bid after longshot Chestnut Schoefield (Simon Allard) carved out wicked fractions of 26.3, 55.1 and 1:23.2 for the first three calls then wore that one down and outkicked Two AM (Tyler Buter) for a nose victory in 1:52.1.

A durable and classy 10-year-old Revenue S gelding trained by Hermann Heitmann, Melady's Monet now owns a 3-3-1 slate and $86,000 banked from eight starts this year and a commendable 55-38-27 slate and career earnings of nearly $1.42 million from 180 lifetime outings. The well-traveled trotter has been able to take his talents on the road throughout his career and sports victories on three different sized ovals.
