Mighty Souper swoops from off pace in Race 4 on 2015 Kentucky Oaks Day

May 1st, 2015

Live Oak Plantation's Mighty Souper parlayed a ground-saving trip off a fast early pace into a turf maiden victory in Friday's 4TH race on Kentucky Oaks Day at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, the 4-1 second choice angled out down the lane, and got a decisive split between foes, to punch home late. Mighty Souper pulled away to complete the firm-turf mile in 1:35 and returned $10.40.

Cash in My Pocket took second. The winner's stablemate, Diva Express, deserves extra credit for hanging tough for third after pressing fractions of :22 4/5 and :46.

Mighty Souper, a daughter of War Front, was making her third career start. Fourth and sixth, respectively, in her first two tries at Santa Anita, the dark bay sophomore hails from the family of multiple Grade 1 star Lakeway, who missed by a head to Sardula in the 1994 Kentucky Oaks. This is also the family of 1976 Kentucky Derby-winning champion Bold Forbes.
