Mohawk Park hosts Breeders Crown finals
One week before the best thorouhgbreds in the world will convene at Santa Anita Park for the Breeders Cup races on turf and dirt, Mohawk Park hosted eight Breeders Crown finals on Saturday night with division honors and hanress horse of the year perhaps on the line.
In the first of the eight Breeders Crown finals on Saturday night, Caviart Ally (Andrew McCarthy) overcame a brief first over bid to upset 2-5 favorite Shartin N (Tim Tetrick), the future book favorite for harness horse of the year, to score by two lengths in 1:49.3 in $300,000 Breeders Crown Open Mare final. A five-year-old Bettor's Delight mare trained by Brett Pelling, Caviart Ally now sports an 8-7-2 slate and $625,000 from 17 starts this year and the Virginia-bred mare pushed her career earnings past $1.8 million.
Shartin N suffered just her third defeat in 17 starts this year and the Jim King, Jr. trainee may have suffered a glancing blow to her harness horse of the year chances. The reigning queen of this division is still in line for a pair of Dan Patch Awards, but she will be hard pressed to rebuff several challengers for the ultimate prize.She just missed becoming the first mare in harness racing history to reach the $1 million mark in three consecutive seasons, but has one more chance to do so.
Then one race later in the $325,000 Breeders Crown Open Mare Trot, Manchego (Dexter Dunn) easily lived up to her role as the 1-2 favorite when she brushed to command before the half, raced unpressed down the backside and through the far turn and drew off from Plunge Blue Chip and Emoticon Hanover to score by five lengths in 1:51. The four-year-old daughter of Muscle Hill trained by Nancy Johansson has won five straight starts and seven of 15 starts overall this year and eclipsed the $2 million mark in career earnings.
One race later in the $500,000 Breeders Crown Final for three-year-old filly trotters, Winndevie (Brian Sears) overcame an extended first over journey to prevail as the 8-5 favorite in 1:53. A sophomore daughter of Credit Winner trained by Trond Smedshammer, Winndevie now owns a 6-4-3 slate and $560,000 banked from 14 starts this year and 12 wins and nearly $800,000 banked from 21 career outings.
Then one race later in the $550,000 Breeders Crown Final for three-year-old filly pacers, Warrawee Ubeaut (Yannick Gingras) lived up to her role as the 1-5 favorite when she brushed to command before the half, met token pressure from Tall Drink Hanover through the far turn then kept that one at bay through the lane for a length score in 1:50.2. The sophomore daughter of Sweet Lou trained by Ron Burke has won six straight starts and now owns 12 wins and nearly $950,000 banked from 17 seasonal outings.
One race later in the $500,000 Breeders Crown Open Pace final for older pacers, American History (Joe Bongiorno) left to gain command early, yielded to Dosoduro Hanover down the backside, benefited from that one's late drift turning for home, closed willingly inside and prevailed by a length in 1:48.3 A four-year-old American Ideal stallion trained by Tony Alagna, American History now owns a 5-2-2 slate and $440,000 banked from 18 starts this year and has quietly enjoyed a stellar season.
American History had earlier won the $150,000 Bobby Quillen and will be among the favorites for the upcoming $100,000 Potomac Pace at Rosecroft Raceway on Sunday, November 10. McWicked failed to offer a serious bid first over and faded to fourth as the 6-5 favorite but is expected for the Potomac. Dosoduro Hanover finished second in a very good effort and should be headed south for the Potomac.

Gimpanzee pwns seven wins in 12 starts this year and 16 victories and $1.6 million banked in 21 career outings. Greenshoe is still likely division champion and will have to outlast Manchego for trotter of the year.

The French invader made his North American debut in style and upended a field of solid older trotters over a sloppy track amid rainy conditions.
That same evening at Yonkers Raceway in New York, Mac's Jackpot (Brent Holland) overcame an extended first over trip to wear down 4-5 choice Don Domingo N (Jordan Stratton) on the far turn and edged clear late to a two-length score in 1:51.3. A five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained by Jeff Smith, Mac's Jackpot notched his seventh win from 24 starts this year and now owns 21 wins and over $800,000 banked from 89 career outings and likely earned a spot in the Open Handicap next weekend.
One race later in the $42,000 Open Handicap Trot, Melady's Monet (Eric Goodell) benefited from a second over jo0urney behind The Veteran (Holland) down the backside and through the far, fanned wide for the drive and drew clear late to a two-length score in 1:54.1.
