Money seeks to multiply earnings in Red Smith Handicap

Consistent Chad Brown-trained turf galloper Money Multiplier should appreciate easier company when he contests the 1 3/8-mile Red Smith Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Oct. 11.
Money Multiplier (Lookin At Lucky) finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) last year, but missed this year’s edition after finishing eighth in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) at Belmont Park Sept. 30.
However, prior to that he was in good form. He began his 2017 season with victory in the Monmouth Stakes (G2), before finishing runner-up, for the second consecutive year, in the 1 ½-mile Sword Dancer Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.
He faces a weaker field in the Red Smith Handicap, but there’s still some quality turf runners that will test him, including stablemate Call Provision (Lemon Drop Kid), who contests graded stakes company for the first time in 2017 after two allowance victories and a second-place finish in the 1 1/8-mile Ashley T. Cole Stakes.
That race was won by Get Jets (Scat Daddy), who reopposes Call Provision in the Red Smith Handicap. Get Jets had won the 1 1/16-mile West Point Stakes at his previous start.
Hunter O’Riley (Tiz Wonderful) was just two positions behind Money Multiplier in the Sword Dancer Stakes, his most recent run. Prior to that he rallied from last of seven to win the 1 3/8-mile Bowling Green Stakes (G2) at Saratoga.
Returning from the 1 ½-mile Canadian International (G1) to race here are Oscar Nominated (Kitten’s Joy) and Messi (New Approach). Oscar Nominated finished second that day on a soft track to Bullards Alley, while Messi finished ninth in the 10-horse field. Messi had finished third in the 1 ½-mile Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (G1) at his start beforehand.
Oscar Nominated had won the 1 ½-mile Kentucky Turf Cup (G3) at his previous start; the horse that finished fourth that day, St. Louie (Arch), faces him again Saturday after winning an allowance in the interim.
Recent Belmont Park allowance winner Memories of Peter (Disco Rico) takes on graded stakes company for the first time here, as does Soluble (Galileo), third in an allowance on the same course Sept. 30. Spring Quality (Quality Road), fourth in the 1 1/8-mile Knickerbocker Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park at his last start, and Tricked Up (Distorted Humor), seventh in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, complete the field.
