Mountaineer: How to bet the $4,830 Super High 5 carryover

September 8th, 2024

You might want to check out the Sunday card at Mountaineer, thanks to a non-jackpot Super High 5 carryover worth $4,830.

Want to win a share of the prize pool? You’ll have to select the top five finishers in Race 8 (post time 9:55 p.m. ET), a $4,000 maiden claimer taking place over six furlongs on dirt.

The minimum bet amount is $1 unless you box your tickets, in which case you can play at a 50-cent base. But we don’t recommend boxing, because we believe strong tickets can be played without breaking the bank if you key #5 New Jersey Heist (9-5) on top.

New Jersey Heist might be 0-for-14 lifetime, but most of his efforts have come against tougher competition at tracks other than Mountaineer. For example, back in June at Delaware Park, New Jersey Heist ran second in back-to-back $6,250 maiden claimers, beaten a head and three-quarters of a length while earning Brisnet Speed ratings of 68 and 63.

New Jersey Heist posted another 63 when making his Mountaineer debut in a 5 1/2-furlong $4,000 maiden claimer last month. After rating toward the back of a seven-horse field, New Jersey Heist rallied to finish second by 1 1/4 lengths.

Sunday’s field hasn’t come up particularly tough on paper, so a repeat of his last effort should give New Jersey Heist every chance to snag first prize under hot jockey Yan Aviles, the leading rider at Mountaineer this meet.

Wondering which horses you should use underneath? Several contenders are appealing:

  • #1 Booyah (6-1) misfired in his latest start against tougher competition on turf, but two starts back he finished second behind a next-out winner in a $5,000 maiden claimer on dirt at Thistledown, earning a 61 Brisnet Speed rating.
  • #2 Double Warrior (6-1) finished third in a $4,000 maiden claimer dashing 5 1/2 furlongs at Mountaineer last month and has every chance to record a top-five finish under hot jockey Brandon Tapara, a 21% winner at Mountaineer this meet.
  • #6 Andylithic (5-1) has hit the board a bevy of times against maiden special weight competition at Mountaineer and should appreciate dropping in class. He’s recently earned Brisnet Speed ratings of 61 and 59 in sprints.
  • #7 Power of Justice (4-1) is dropping in class out of maiden special weights and may improve while tackling a dirt sprint for the first time.
  • #8 Wildcat Hagrid (8-1) is arguably better on turf than dirt, but he’s recorded multiple top-five finishes in $4,000 maiden claimers over the Mountaineer dirt and may pick up another on Sunday.
  • #10 Mr Bingo (12-1) exits a couple of top-four finishes in six-furlong $4,000 maiden claimers at Mountaineer. A spot in the top five is a distinct possibility.
  • #12 Tizawinner (3-1) is second on the also-eligible list and will need two scratches in order to draw in, but he’s recorded four straight trifecta finishes in $5,000 maiden claimers at Charles Town and is eligible to factor against slightly easier competition at Mountaineer.

Here’s how we’ll bet the Super High 5 if Tizawinner draws in:

  • $1 Super High 5: 5 with 1 with 6,12 with 2,6,10,12 with 2,6,7,8,10,12 ($24)
  • $1 Super High 5: 5 with 6,12 with 1 with 2,6,10,12 with 2,6,7,8,10,12 ($24)
    Total: $48

If Tizawinner scratches, we’ll play these tickets instead:

  • $1 Super High 5: 5 with 1 with 2,6,10 with 2,6,7,10 with 2,6,7,8,10 ($27)
  • $1 Super High 5: 5 with 2,6,10 with 1 with 2,6,7,10 with 2,6,7,8,10 ($27)
    Total: $54

Good luck!
