Mucciolo’s Gulfstream stakes picks for February 22

A pair of stakes events will headline a fine 12-race card at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. I will give my analysis and wagering suggestions for both races, and spotlight an intriguing allowance on the undercard.

World of Trouble (G3)

Eight will go postward in the six-furlong test, led by morning-line choice #2 Lasting Legacy (7-5). The Jason Servis charge was a huge runner-up in the Mr. Prospector (G3) in his seasonal debut and looks tough to upend second time off the break. Tapizar 6-year-old is a must use.

Stakes winner #6 Fast Pass (8-1) has the best turn of foot in a cast that is loaded with early speed. Peter Walder trainee has won or placed in 10 of his 11 local tries, and the bay figures to get a nice set up at a price beneath Christian Torres.

Sophomore fillies will go postward in a six-furlong dash on the dirt. Glitter Woman S. romper #2 Sound Machine (8-5) is running to her $500,000 price tag for Saffie Joseph. Into Mischief filly has put in huge efforts in each of her three local assignments, and the Florida-bred would be of no surprise in this spot.

Three-time graded stakes placed #5 Frank’s Rockette (9-5) merits respect off the pine, and I also expect a bounce-back effort from #4 Lavi (10-1). I think this will be a three-horse race inside the final furlong.

Race 8 -- Allowance

A trio of interesting 3-year-old prospects top a first-level allowance tilt on the undercard. #3 Cost Basis (5-2) graduated in his 2019 finale when topping a strong field that included Risen Star (G2) victor Modernist. $220,000 purchase is training well in preparation of his return for Chad Brown.

#7 Silver Ratio (7-2), a smart debut winner for Pletcher, faces winners for the initial time. Expensive Liam’s Map colt appears to be a horse with a very bright future.

Ian Wilkes’ #8 Violent City (3-1) could have the highest ceiling in the field. $330,000 son of Violence romped at first asking for a conditioner who rarely has them cranked up on debut. Dark bay shows four solid morning drills in advance of his first with winners.

The winner of this allowance contest will likely be bound for the Triple Crown trail next time out.
