Mutuel Field, Bolt d’Oro favored as Pool 1 of 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager closes

The Mutuel Field (#24), or “All Other Three-Year-Olds,” drew the most action during the first of four pools of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW). The Mutuel Field was bet down to 6-5 favoritism when wagering concluded on Pool 1 at 6 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.

Bolt d’Oro (#2), who suffered his first loss when finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last out, was the only other wagering interest to be bet down to single-digit odds in Pool 1. Owned and trained by Mick Ruis, the Medaglia d’Oro colt opened at 10-1 on the morning line but closed at 7-1. The bay colt will pay $17 if he wins the 2018 edition of the Run for the Roses.

Good Magic (#10) managed to defeat Bolt d’Oro in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and was the second favorite among the individual interests when wagering concluded Sunday. The Chad Brown pupil closed at 11-1 after opening at 8-1 and will pay $24.80 for a win in the 2018 Kentucky Derby.

Also of note among the individual interest was the Bob Baffert-trained McKinzie (#14), who opened at 20-1 on the morning line but was bet down to become the 12-1 fourth overall favorite. The bay son of Street Sense captured his maiden debut by 5 1/2 lengths on October 28 at Santa Anita Park. A victory in next year’s Kentucky Derby would see the Kentucky-bred pay $27.

For the third consecutive year, Churchill Downs also offered a Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager (KDSFW) during Pool 1 of the KDFW.

“All Other Sires” (#24) and Medaglia d’Oro (#10) closed out the KDSFW as co-favorites at 5-1. Not far off were Curlin (#4) and Tapit (#18), who were bet down to 6-1 and 8-1, respectively.

Total combined handle on the KDFW and Sire Future Wager came to $293,212, a 10.3 percent increase over last year which saw a combined handle for the two wagers of $265,951.
