My 5 Favorite Songbird Races

September 6th, 2017

Songbird, the great 4-year-old filly trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, has been retired. Owner Rick Porter of Fox Hill Farms said that the great race runner has been retired due to physical issues. There's no reason to doubt Porter's assessment.

Songbird's 4-year-old season hasn't been close to what she showed in both her 2-year-old and 3-year-old seasons. The filly was so fantastic that she finishes with an incredible 13 wins from 15 races. Check out my 5 favorite Songbird races.

My 5 Favorite Songbird Races

1. 2016 Breeders' Cup Distaff

Yep, my favorite Songbird race is the 2016 Breeders' Cup Distaff when she lost by a nose to Beholder. The reason is because Songbird wouldn't give an inch to one of the best fillies or mares to ever run in the history of horse racing. Beholder beat Songbird due to the whims of the Horse Racing Gods. That's how close the margin of victory was.

2. 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies

Classic Songbird. She dominated her competition by running them into the ground. Rachel Valentina appeared to have a shot down the backstretch. Then, Mike Smith pushed the accelerator on Songbird, and like she did in most of her 13 wins, she took off to the wire. Wow.

3. 2016 G1 Santa Anita Oaks

Songbird went off at 1 to 9 in the 2016 Santa Anita Oaks. That's not why I love this race. I love this race because it shows how devastating the daughter of Medaglia D'Oro was on her very best days. She was impossible to tough. Her competition, when she was right, couldn't even breathe on her.

4. 2016 G1 Coaching Club American Oaks

Songbird faced one of the few fillies that was supposed to give her a challenge in the talented Carina Mia. All she did was put the same beat down on Carina Mia that she had done to the rest of her competition.

5. 2015 G1 Del Mar Debutante

Bob Baffert entered a decent 2-year-old filly named Pretty N Cool into the 2015 Del Mar Debutante. All Songbird did was pull away from the Baffert filly in the stretch. This race signaled exactly how great Songbird was to become.

Songbird will definitely be missed. The 2017 Breeders Cup Distaff won't be the same without her. She was the best filly to come around since Beholder. At least we got a chance to see her run against that one in the 2016 BC Distaff.

Happy retirement, Songbird.
