Newcomers highlight Tuesday card at Rosecroft
While the Tuesday evening cards at Rosecroft Raceway have been solid from the outset of the meet, they have gotten a little tougher since Dover Downs concluded its extended winter-spring meet and several more invaders will highlight this Tuesday's program.
In the opening race on the card, Chinese Cuisine, the current all-age track record holder for trotters courtesy of a 1:53.4 score here last fall, makes his local seasonal debut for trainer-driver John Duer after spending the first three months at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. Chinese Cuisine will be among the favorites in the $9000 Open 2 for trotters, although he won only once - through disqualification - in nine tries over the New Jersey miler.
Several races later in the sixth, a conditioned event for pacing fillies and mares, Mildred's Button makes her local debut for trainer David Rearic after spending the last three months facing lifetime conditioned foes at Dover Downs. The four-year-old filly has plenty of ability, but the combination of the seven hole and facing older rivals could prove difficult this week.
Two races later in another conditioned event for pacing fillies and mares, both Abbi's Gabbi and Oh Sweet Penelope arrive from Dover. Abbi's Gabbi also makes her overall seasonal debut while Oh Sweet Penelope arrives exiting many of the same races that Mildred's Button contested at Dover.
But the feature race of the evening is the $9000 Open 2 for pacing fillies and mares, a race that attracted a quartet of talented Dover shippers. Together Again N, Bj's Sweetheart, Springforth and Friendsnheartbeat will occupy the four outside stalls when the gate folds in the 11th race on Tuesday, but they could overcome the posts to garner the top four spots at the wire. Together Again N won over the track last fall, while Bj's Sweetheart and Springforth have the talent to win at any oval.
