Ocean Downs offer two nights at Maryland Race Fund action
Beach goers who don their tans in Ocean City during the day know where to look for some evening excitement amid cooler climes each summer as they venture to Ocean Downs, a half-mile harness racing oval which had plenty of offer on Sunday and Monday evenings.
On Monday evening the track hosted several Maryland Standardbred Race Fund events for three-year-olds. Baby I'm Worth It (Russell Foster) lived up to her role as the 2-5 favorite in a $13,000 MDRF split for sophomore filly trotters when she benefited from a pocket trip behind Boo Boo Baa Baa (Corey Callahan) and prevailed by a length in 1:59.3. The three-year-old daughter of Explosive Matter is owned and trained by Arlene Cameron.
One race later on the Monday card, Own It (Montrell Teague) forged a mild 5-2 upset when he scored by four lengths over favored Toms Titanium (Foster) in 1:55.2 in the first $17,000 MDRF division. Then several races later on the card, Slick Tony (Foster) maintained his winning ways when he captured the second $17,000 MDRF split by four lengths in 1:55. The No Spin Zone stallion owned, bred and trained by George "Ronnie" Leager is pointing for the $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund Final at Harrington Raceway on Governor's Day.
One night earlier on the Sunday card, Ocean Downs fans were treated to a surprise visit by retired Hall of Fame driver John Campbell on a night when the track offered several MDRF events for trotters and pacers. Campbell signed autographs for the fans near the track winner's circle in his first visit to the oval. The sport's all-time leading money winning driver recorded over 10,600 victories in his career and went out in style roughly one year ago by winning his final drive at the Meadowlands before taking over as President of the Hambletonian Society.
Onlookers were also treated to several good performances on the Sunday night card, typically the best that it offers each week. Whats The Word (Callahan) easily lived up to his role as the 1-9 favorite in a $23,600 MDRF event for three-year-old colt trotters when he carved out honest fractions of 28.3, 57 and 1:26.1 en route to an eye-opening 16-length victory in 1:55. sophomore son of Hambo winner Donato Hanover trained by Rene Allard, Whats The Word exited the tough PASS events and simply toyed with his foes at the seaside oval on Sunday night.

Kiss A Dragon (Foster) won the $11,000 Open Handicap as the 6-5 favorite in 1:54.1, Downthehighway (Kirby) took the $8500 Platinum class in 1:55 as the 1-9 choice, while White Rolls (Mike Cole) won the latter $7500 Gold Class in 1:53.4 after All Gold (Frank Milby) fittingly won the opening $7500 Gold class in 1:55.3 by three lengths over Wisers Deluxe.
