Orange Park Derby Round 2

October 26th, 2017

Lester Raines Kennel was the big winner in round 1, but there are still a ton of points available in round 2 for a greyhound to accumulate to move on to the quarter-finals. Will the first-round winners continue their success? Will new names throw their hats into the mix? Or, will the greyhounds that missed out in round 1, find their mojo again? All questions will be answered in round 2 of the $35,000 Orange Park Derby.

Friday Evening October 27th, 2017

Race 7 – First round winner Lee Trinity looks like the greyhound to beat again in this race. She has the best early speed of this bunch and should be unabated to the early lead again. Hanging on late, she will be tough to reel in before the wire. Pushing the leader for most of this race should be her next-door neighbor, CBJ Sooner. This solid grade A will try to improve on a 4th place effort in round 1. Others to consider include the well posted threat, Businessasusual, and the on again, off again, runner Like A Boss From a good outside post position. (4-5-2-7)

Race 9 – More continued success as another first round winner gets the nod in this effort. Lk’s Fanciful is one of two solid grade A’s in this race, and with the early rush and a good post position, she could be tough to take down once again tonight. Lee Banshee is a good closer that will make the most of the outside starting box in this effort. Just missing in her last two in a row, she will be a late threat to the winner in this effort. Watch out early for the quick breaking Rt Banana Foster that can steal the lead, and the win, on occasion. Coming off a big race, it would be a miss not to mention Hustle It Upgirl. This late driving threat could be tough if she can get through the early traffic and find room to close in the stretch. (3-6-2-4)

Race 11 – Forget the last race, time for the true champion to show up and run. Lk’s Centuria was in the lead and in control, until she found trouble in both turns in the first-round race. Here I expect her to get back to business as usual. Hitting the lead, stealing a lead, and coasting home for the victory. Trying to ruin her plans will be the always in the money stretch threat, Dutch Casey, along with the stretch rushing factor Super C Amy. Even though she missed in round 1, watch out for Good Luckchigger as well. If he wants to run, and gets some room, he could challenge for the win in the deep stretch tonight. (7-2-8-3)

Race 13 – Rebound time for B’s Villantnight as well. Most of the time a 4th is not a big race, but his in round 1 was a gem. Crowded at the break and shuffled to last, he could have given up, but he closed throughout and managed to make it interesting in the stretch. Here I expect him to be closer early and for him to overpower everyone late for the W.  The early leader should be Ww’s Jax Straw. Posted well on the rail, with the best early speed, she will lead to the stretch, but late all that early foot will cost her as she finished 2nd once again. Others to content with should be the solid grade A 660 threat Dutch Aces Wild, and the converted Sprinter Kells Pretender should factor with the leaders early and hold on somewhere in the superfecta at the wire. (5-1-3-4)

Race 15 – The toughest of the races on the card features 3 first round winners and each has a shot here at repeating those efforts. Each won their races from off the pace, so it could come down to who can close the best in the stretch to get the job done. In that case, you must go with Herstal over Boc’s Queen Lady and Nizy. The first two have won stakes, Herstal over 770, and Boc’s Queen Lady was the Ironhound Champ, so they know how to get things done. Nizy is a newcomer to the route and the stakes scene and still has something to prove to the rest of the crowd. All the greyhound will have to catch Gs Humongous if they want to win this effort. This converted Sprinter took the field to the wire in round one and settled for place by a nose at the wire. Another round another strong front running effort, but in the end, the closers will be too much for him to handle. I think Herstal outlast Queeny for the win, with Humongous getting caught and holding off Nizy at the finish line. (6-3-4-8)

The third round, the quarter-finals, of the Orange Park Derby will feature 4 races and will run on Monday evening October 30th at bestbet Jacksonville.
